Latin name - Ranunculus ficaria

Everybody living in a temperate climate must have seen Lesser Celandine, being aware of it or not. In the beginning of March the darkgreen horseshoe-shaped leaves emerge, in March/April the yellow starry flowers open like little suns close to the ground. The plants form "mats" on the ground, not growing higher than 10 cm.
It's a very charming plant when growing in the wild, but in a garden it's downright "invasive" and will soon be regarded as a weed.
Lesser Celandine isn't very fussy about its growing circumstances - on light as well as heavy soils it will grow happily, and flowering in shady places just happens a bit later than in a sunnier spot. It likes a moist growing-place, but in a time of drought it also thrives. The tubers will draw the water from the soil, which can be of disadvantage to adjacent plants.

A shining sun with very glossy petals, looking "greasy" like those of a buttercup. This plant which is related to the later flowering buttercup (also belonging to the family of Ranunculaceae) by some is confused with that equally common weed. Buttercups generally have only 5 petals, and these are much rounder than the mostly pointed ones of Lesser Celandine

Nice take of the flower, Gert.

The leaves, however, belong to another plant.. Those of R. ficaria are hear-shaped.

Cheers,

Ishi
