Animals at the backyard pond:

This is the well known Azure damselfly male (Odonata; Coenagrionidae; Coenagrion puella; Hufeisen-Azurjungfer; L'Agrion jouvencelle), sitting on a Sedge. It looks at me "Sam-the-Eagle" like. The slender animal has 33 mm length, the head is 3 mm wide. The species is widely distributed in Eurasia and occurs in great numbers. It occasionally wanders about quite far from open water.

I had no chance to picture this dragonfly head-on when the sun was shining, I choose a rainy cold day to do so. In addition to that I captured the animal and kept it in the fridge for 20 minutes before setting it back at the pond for photography.

Technical stuff: I use a macro lens and dual macro flash. I tried to improve the sharpness of the picture by applying a bigger aperture, f/10 for once (usually I work with f/20). Tell me what you think about it.

Hi Neighbor!
We've also posted the same kind of shot: close-ups of the head of species from the Odonata order :-)
Exceptional DOF for f/10 and great focusing too.
Sharp with excellent detail.
Very well composed too.
Perfect lighting from the flash.

Exceptionally well done!

Joe

Bonjour,

Anne

Hi Dietrich.
Very impressive portrait work of the charming damselfly. I welcome use rather open aperture for getting such level of details and sharpness. It is simply great. Colour palette is wonderful too and so pleasant for look as well as the diagonal composition and perfect framing/composition of the shot. Bravo once more.
Alexei.

Hi Dietrich,
I think that F/10 was the perfect choice for this shot.
You've pulled in most of the front legs & all of the face/eyes.
That's all we need to see here in this most excellent closeup view :)
Howard

Might be well known to you Dietrich! But so far this is the only one of its kind which I can find space for in blue things....although I do believe I have seen some similar..your ramshackle garden gives the clues to something much more like James Bond!
