[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Sara Longwing (Heliconius Sara Theudela) is a common, tropical butterfly at the edges and in the more open areas of the lowland jungles of Costa Rica.

Sara Longwing butterflies have long, rounded forewings with two broad, white bands. Their ventral wing surfaces are dark brown and spotted with red at the base, while their dorsal wing surfaces are black and washed with metallic blue.

The Costa Rican subspecies H. Sara Theudela has a broad, white edge on the hindwings which is absent in other H. Sara butterflies.

The Sara Longwing butterflies seemed to be especially fond of these brilliant orange Palicourea (Palicourea sp.) flowers, and a small, fluttering cloud of these lovely butterflies would quickly gather around these popular flowers whenever the frequent rains subsided.

Sara Longwing butterflies lay their eggs on passionflower (Passiflora spp.) vines, and since Sara Longwing butterflies are one of the species of Heliconius that engage in pupal mating, adult male Sara Longwing butterflies will also seek out these larval food plants. Male Sara Longwing butterflies will search for the distinctive pheromones of female pupae on the passionflower vines. Once a male finds a female pupa ready to emerge the next day, he will wait there perched on it and then mate with the new female just as she is emerging.

I took the shot in a butterfly zoo, the biggest in The Netheland.
Some people have to learn, I am on of them, to take photo's with f100 in a low light situation. I have had a few good lessons to go agree with this pont. I would say look to the result.

Prachtige opname van deze vlinder. Kleuren en scherpte zijn erg goed. Uitstekende compositie en diepte in de foto.
Nooit geweten dat deze vlindertuin de grootste van Nederland is. Groter dan Emmen dus.

Hallo Jaap
Although I have seen the Sara Longwing a few times on the gallery it never seems to bore me. It remains is a petite and striking little butterfly. I cannot help to like its matchstick Pinnochio legs. A lovely photo of this pretty butterfly. Wonderful colours and details and a great composition. I like the simplicity of it. Focus, sharpness and depth of field are just right. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the photography lesson. I will have to experiment with the f stops! A beautiful butterfly in my favorite color combination - red, black, and white. A great position to show off those stunning wing markings. Fine details of the entire Sara Longwing.

Sara Longwing...wow what a bautiful name for a Butterfly Jaap.....a very fine image of Sara here with good details, colours and sharpness.I like the way you have composed it and the contrasts balanced in the picture. The muted Bg sets off the subject very well.

I do not know what is better – terrific BG or fine image of the splendid butterfly. Both together create an amazing composition which is great for looking. Colour palette is superb, sharpness and details of the butterfly are ultimate, framing of the shot is blameless. Bravo. Well done.
