HESPERIA COMMA (LINNAEUS, 1758)

Silver-spotted Skipper
Komma-Dickkopffalter
Le comma ou virgule

Family,Subfamily: Hesperiidae, Hesperiinae
Size: 14-25mm
Range: Across Europe and temperate Asia
Habitat: warm, south-facing slopes with patches of bare soil
Larval foodplant: Festuca ovina

The underside is brown with silvery spots, which is particular to this species. It is called "comma" because of the comma-like sign on the upper wings.
The flower an Inula species (probably Inula montana)is very attractive for insects. I have taken pictures of almost twenty different butterflies and flies posed on them.

Hello Anne,

This is an interesting photo. I like the solution you have chosen putting the dark colord butterfly on the darker background. Nice contrast between the flower and insect. Light falls nice on the heary body of the butterfly.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Very fine composition with the Skipper and the yellow flowers, Anne.
Both of them are highlighted by the dark BG.
Very attractive artistic shot.
Thanks and regards.

Hi Anne,
Wonderful shot of this great looking Skipper on those bright yellow flowers. The lighting is superb and the image is neat and sharp. The dark BG works well here and makes the image classic. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Anne,
A great macro both of the Inula flowers and the Silver-spotted Skipper feeding on them. This was taken from a fine POV with excellent sharpness and in superb lighting that somehowled to a very dark BG though you haven't used flash.
A superb image and thanks for sharing it.
Bon soirée,
Ivan

Hi Anne,
how are you? Great posting you have here, i love the lighting and the DOF is excellent. Very good detail and colour too, well done!
Paul

Couple of notes...first off..Arnica Montana, which is a cousin to this flower, is a wonderful medicinal..however the USDA banned it's sale in anything other than homeopathic which is so very little as to not really work unless one subscribes to that theory...but Arnica is the second best medicinal herb I have ever used...one has to grow and infuse it themselves though..cannot buy it any longer...and from what I am reading, this is used similarly in France...so that in itself is cool. I wasn't aware..I wonder if it is available over there..I sure would buy some!

The Montana is a wonderful perch for your skipper..You know honestly either could do without the other, but together they are quite dynamic! Very well seen..

Hallo Anne!

Sehr schönes Bild! Das kräftige Gelb der Blume vor dem schwarzen Hintergrund sticht angenehm in die Augen, das diskretere, aber schön gezeichnete Insekt ist dann die Kirsche auf dem Kuchen.

Grüessli

Markus

Hi Anne,
I like those insect photos were there is more to see than only the insect. And, you do have a keen eye for those types of photos. In this one the light shining on the two flowers is amazing. The dark BG helps ofcourse, but still the illumination is great. That light also made the insect shine.
TFS,
Niek
