I spotted the Hammerkop a few times in Kruger but wasn't able to photograph it.
This one was captured in a zoo a few months ago.

The Hammerkop (Scopus umbretta), also known as Hamerkop, Hammerhead, Hammerhead stork, Umbrette, Umber bird, or Anvilhead, is a medium-sized (56 cm) bird with a long shaggy crest. The shape of its head with a curved bill and crest at the back is reminiscent of a hammer, hence its name. Its plumage is a drab brown all over.

Hi Annick,
I know the feelling. Birdwatchers are happy to spot the birds, sometime just to hear them. For us is a bit more… difficult. You are lucky to have this bird even in a zoo. Your picture shows it very well. TFS

Hi Annick,

Nice and sharp and you waited untill the bird was busy doing something.
Among the Zulu people in SA they will give a nickname to a person fairly quickly. When I was a youngster the hair on the back of my head stood up, probably due to the short haircuts of those days. My Zulu nickname was Teguan the zulu name for the hamerkop.

Hallo Annick,
Vreemd dat je de Hamerkop niet kon fotograferen, want in heel Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara zie je ze erg veel als er water en/of vis in de buurt is. En een vogel die wereldwijd bekend is door zijn Nederlandse naam. Ze maken nesten in bomen waar wij gemakkelijk de nacht in kunnen doorbrengen, zo groot.
Maar deze foto mag er ook zijn. Schitterende natuurlijke kleuren en uitstekende scherpte. Erg goede diepte in de foto.
