Phoenicopterus ruber. It lives in extensive shallow lakes or lagoons of salt or soda water, where it builds conical heaps of mud on which to lay its eggs. Length 125-145 cm, Wing-span 140-160 cm.
Here, in lake Kerkini's eastern shore. The lake was formed in 1932, when a dam was built on Strymon river. It is the wildlife-richest habitat in Greece and one of the ten water-reserves protected by Ramsar Treaty.
