Bombus hortorum (Small garden bumblebee) [in Turk. Bombus, Tüylü Arı]

Hi Friends, today i wanted to paint France on the TN map:) We (me and my cousin Merih –who is also a TN Member and normally living in London) have visited Calais, a beautiful town located at the NW France for a daily break while I was gone to London with a ferry between Dover and Calais. That was a nice time for me and I took some shots. This is one of them.

I would like to dedicate this beauty to My dear French Friend and also My Neighbour today:) Jacqueline (Noisette). Hope you could like this MF!

TFL and Have a nice new Week!
Cheers,

*****************************

This is a large bumblebee (Length of males: 13-15 mm, Length of queens: 17-22 mm, Length of workers: 11-16 mm) which has a fairly 'scruffy' appearance with long hair. It is a yellow, black and white banded species, with a long head. The tongue, which is as long as the body, is the longest of all bumblebees found in central Europe. Three 'castes' occur within bumblebee nests, a 'queen' (the reproductive female), 'workers' (non-reproductive females) and males. All three castes are broadly similar in appearance, but males can be distinguished as they lack stings and have longer antennae than females.
This species is one of the commonest and most widespread of bumblebees found throughout the Palaearctic region, and has been introduced to New Zealand and Iceland. Distributed in a range of habitats, including the edges of woodlands and scrubby areas, and is common in gardens.
The exceptionally long tongue of this species allows it to obtain nectar from plants with deep-tubed flowers, which honeybees and other bumblebees cannot exploit. It is an important pollinator of fruit trees and clover, and also visits deadnettle, foxgloves, cowslips and a range of other plants.
Colonies contain between 50 and 120 insects, and are present between late April and early October. The queen is the only member of a colony to survive the winter, they emerge in April and begin to search for a suitable place in which to establish a nest. Nests are typically made underground, in banks and among tree roots, or occasionally above ground in bird boxes. The queen creates a circular chamber in which she builds a wax egg cell, and she lays her first batch of eggs inside. The eggs are laid on a layer of pollen, which is collected by the queen, and then covered with a layer of wax. After hatching, the white larvae are fed on honey and pollen by the queen. When they are fully-grown, the larvae cease to feed and develop into pupae after spinning a protective silk cocoon around themselves. During the pupal stage, the larvae undergo complex changes, and develop into adult workers. Throughout their development, the queen incubates this first brood by lying over the cell in which they grow, keeping them warm with the heat of her body. After emerging, the workers undertake the duties of foraging and nest care, and the queen remains inside the nest, producing further batches of eggs. When the colony reaches its peak, males and new queens are produced. Males develop from unfertilised eggs; after leaving the nest they fly around in search of new queens with which to mate. In this species, males are present between June and October, but their numbers peak towards the end of July. After mating, these new queens search for a place to hibernate. The colony and the old queen gradually die, and the newly mated queens emerge the following spring, to establish new colonies.

Hi Bayram. This is a first class close up of this Bee. One of the best i have seen. Your sharp focusing and detail shows the pollen all over its legs and body. Your use of the light gives such rich colours. Along with interesting notes, well done TFs.

I love your shots but looking at them reminds me of some of Joeys images close in...He is a child prodigy in the photography field...old folks like me are "old shoes"...it is teh new generation and people like you who teach them how...you folks are on the cutting edge!

Hi Barea,

Today I still have points, I saved two to You. :) Great macro, absolutely deserves a dark green smiley due to the fantastic color tones and many details, but I don't fully agree with Ivan ('Argus'): in my eyes the minus is the oof eye of the bee. Otherwise a wonderful capture, I admit.

You know my heart is golden, but my mind is still constructively critical. :)

Respectful regards, tfs, László

Hello Bayram,

You makes clear the kind of talent you have. This is an excellent macro. Incredible level of detail, even the pollen grains could be counted if it wanted to. The brightness is very well managed. And every detail of the "highlights" of the insect is very well appreciated. Greetings and thanks for sharing this type of work.

Regards,

Jesús

Geckoman!!!! How are you my friend? :-D
Very nice photo of this Bumblebee.
Great lighting and detail.
Gorgeous colours.

Well done, Bayram!

Joe

Hi Bro!
Technically a superb shot, but in terms of beauty, not in your class of shots. And I say that knowing how you make every shot of yours so beautiful.
Again, I feel very small to actually say this, I hope you do not mind!
As I said, for me your shots are the best, and this shot is also excellent, only your style is missing since I have never seen you cut off the environment, in this case the flower, in any other shot of yours....
Cheers Brother!
Goldy

Süper bir makro çalışma olmuş Bayram hocam.
Elinize sağlık.

Hi Bayram,

Apologies MF I can see I've missed a few of your posting of late, this is a real stunner, and the detail in the Bee is amazing. Excellent POV and the colour of the flower is just beautiful, but what makes this a striking image is the composition itself, with the flower taking up the lower half, the Bee in perfect focus and separated from the green natural background, wonderful shot mate, love it.

Cheers Rick :)

Merhaba Hocam,
Polenlere bezenmiş arıyı çok güzel çekmişsiniz, elinize sağlık.
Saygılarımla, naşit
