Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus (Turkish Gecko)

This beautiful gecko is widely distributed in the Mediterranean region of N Africa, Near East (Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Syria & Jordan), Asia Minor (Anatolia) and Europe. It is introduced also into N America. It is represented with two subspecies; H. turcicus turcicus which is known most of the parts of the known distribution area of the species and H. turcicus lavadeserticus known from the lava-desert parts of Syria and NE Jordan. The later one differs from the nominate subspecies in its slender habit (in the basalt desert), smaller body size, grey to black and yellowish-orange coloration, and pholidosis.
A medium-sized, relatively slender gecko with distinct dorsal tubercles. Adults reach a total length up to 9-10 cm. The head is triangular. The eyes are relatively big, with a vertical pupil and brownish iris. All digits are clawed, with two rows of lamellae. The dorsal scales are granular, with 14-16 rows of prominent tubercles. Transversal rows of distinct tubercles are present also dorsally on the tail. The ventral scales are small and flat, however the medial subcaudal scales are enlarged. Males can be distinguished from females by having 4-8 preanal pores, enlarged postcloacal scales, swollen hemipenial pouches and larger head.
The coloration varies in shadows of light brown and grey, with darker spots above. The dorsal pattern consists of a more or less distinct combination of wide, dark and light transverse bands with intermixed darker spots. Many of the tubercles are whitish. The dorsal pattern of juveniles is more contrast, sometimes with conspicuous dark and light tail cross bars.
It lives under stones, in crevices of rocks, in houses and ruins. Feeds on insects and spiders. Largely nocturnal, but may be active by day. A female lays 2 eggs.
Found in all coastal and inner zones of Northern & Southern Cyprus with a vertical distribution to 1000 m, and it is represented with Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus.

Bayram merhaba,

Hello Bayram,
Wow, what a beautiful eye! And a fine Gecko that we must look for on Cyprus next time we go there! I love watching lizards and geckos and this one has such a beautiful pattern. Great sharpness and nice colours too. A very fine presentation!

Hello Bayram,
wonderful image with a good view on the details on the back of the gecko. Another fantastic picture of yours!
Regards, Jacob

Hola Bayram,
You've captured this "Turkish Gecko" quite nicely, both from the viewpoint of focal sharpness and of pattern and coloration characteristics. That portrait of course, is a beauty by itself, however, to my mind, it disrupts the pure beauty of the original composition by "intruding" within the frame, it would be better to upload it separately as another post.

Merhaba Bayram,
Fine capture of the Turkish Gecko in an excellent composition with good detail. The inset close-up of the head shows the details extremely well and both images are taken from an ideal POV.
Well done my friend and thanks for sharing this: we learn a lot from you!
Ivan

Hocam yine elinize sağlık. Tüm detaylar belirgin. Bu fotolarla bazıları yayın bile yapar:). Sağlıcakla hocam. Selamlar.

Hi Bayram,

A wonderful looking Gecko - so different from the ones we have here in the Sonoran Desert. Excellent shot showing us the entire creature. I love the insert - that eye is magnificent. Wonderful natural colors and sharp details.

Jane

nice one, I know it from Israel, I even had one in my office several years ago. greetings Ori

Hi Bayram

I have always wondered what the most instructive way to take documentary shots of lizards and you have just given me a lesson! I like the overall perspective from the back - and the little inset with the side-on of the head. I usally end up taking side on pics and lose so much on the coloration and the legs and feet.

Thanks!
Ravi

BTW, excellent macro of the head!

Hi Bayram, this is a good shot of the Turkish Gecko, and the close-up of his head is very clear to see. What pretty patterns it has.
Cheers

Hello Bayram,
Geckos are one of my favourite reptile group and I always like to watch them. Thispresentation looks really nice for me, the idea to present entire reptile and its portriat was very good in my opinion.
Note is as always professional and informative :)
Best greetings,
Radomir

Selam Hocam! Bu keler kadar hassasını hiç görmemiştim. Çok güzel renklerle güzel detaylar yakalamışsınız. Teşekkürler.
Deniz

Hi Bayram,
Great focus, pov and details of this gecko. Very nice lizard, I dont seen in the wild but this year I hope to found it in European Turkey or Greece.
All the best,
Iulian

Merhaba Hocam,
