Cyrtopodion (Mediodactylus) kotschyi fitzingeri (Fitzinger’s Gecko)

The detailed information of the species and subspecies were given in my some previous postings [C1, C2 & C3]. Also two days ago I have uploaded an additional capture to show the extremely camouflage exhibited by the same species. This post was also captured from the same gecko but this time a bit closer to take your attention its head details, especially on GECKO EYES.

Geckos are generally small (30–90 mm), plump lizards with large heads and eyes and a soft, granular skin that may have scattered tubercles. They are distributed throughout the warmer parts of the world (approx. 900 species) and all members of the family Gekkonidae (or Geckonidae). They differ from other lizards in possessing a cat-like vertical pupil (except Day Geckos, i.e. the members of the genus Phelsuma –which are mainly distributed in Madagascar) which is most obvious in good light. Most geckos are basically nocturnal (except Phelsuma species), although same of them may be at least partly active by day, especially in temperate regions. Like many other night-active animals, they have especially large eyes. These are usually covered by a 'transparent spectacle' (eye cover), as in snakes and snake-eyed lizards (such as Field lizard Ophisops elegans), and cannot be closed. In fact, geckos have eyelids but in most species [excluding the Eublepharine geckos – which I have uploaded a shot of a species of this group, they have true eyelids as emphasized in their scientific name, i.e. in Lat. eu: true, ble: eyelid, phora: bearing] they are fused together and the spectacle develops as a very large window.

Hoping that you like this shot!

Cheers,

Bayram

PS. This shot was taken during our herpetological trip to Cyprus in April, 2008.

Hello Bayram.
This shot of a Fitzinger's Gecko shows how well camouflaged it can be in its habitat: even the remarkable eye is a part of the camouflage! The sharpness and POV allows us to see this beauty from your homeland very well though.
An excellent post my friend and thanks for sharing it!
Cheers,
Ivan
