Schreiber’s Fringe-toed Lizard ( Acanthodactylus schreiberi) [in Turk. Kıbrıs Tarak Parmaklı Kertenkelesi]

The adult male lizard was photographed in Alagadi Turtle Beach (Kyrenia), Northern Cyprus during our last herpetological trip to Cyprus. This capture is also my 100th posting :)

By the way, I wished to state that “I AM ENJOYING POSTING MY CAPTURES ON TN AND SHARING MY KNOWLEDGE WITH ALL PEOPLE AS A “SCIENTIST”, AND AM ENJOYING SEEING OTHERS' PICTURES READING THEIR NOTES, AND AM ENJOYING THE MANY “HEARTFELT AND BELOVED” FRIENDS WHICH I HAVE MADE IN TN. In this way, today I would like to dedicate this 100th capture to all my TN friends, Thank you my friends and I wish you all the best!

A relatively big-sized diurnal species with a total length up to 15-20 cm. The occipital plate on top of head absent or rudimentary; a longitudinal depression on the anterior part of head. Usually four entire supraocular plates. Large ear opening with no anterior denticulation; Unpectinate border of eyelids. Subocular plate usually extends down to the edge of the mouth. 71-108 rows of scales around mid-trunk; femoral pores between 19-29. The lateral edges of the toes with fringe-like short spines, especially obvious at the outer borders of the 4th toes. The dorsum with 6-7 longitudinal white lines in young, with dark longitudinal stripes in-between, may be overlaid with round spots. The lined pattern more or less disappears on mature specimens, replaced by dark brownish and yellowish gray maculations. The venter is whitish. In breeding season, the venter of the males and females mostly become brilliant reddish and greenish, respectively.

Schreiber’s Fringe-toed Lizard inhabits sandy areas with sparse vegetation. Very agile and quick moving, difficult to catch in open places. It feeds on insects. A female lays 3-5 eggs.

This species is distributed basically in Cyprus with a vertical distribution to 1000 m (Troodos Mountain, Southern Cyprus). However, two relict populations are found in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey (Botas, Adana) and in a small area including the southern Lebanon and northernmost of Israel.

One of its subspecies, A. s. syriacus inhabits the sandy banks of Lebanon and Israel.

In Cyprus, the nominate subspecies, A. s. schreiberi is present.

Although the Anatolian population of the species was accepted as the nominotypic form by some Authors, this case needs further examination. In this way, one of my graduate student now studying on this subject comparatively.

The two known subspecies are different from each other in the following characteristics: Very small dorsal scales granular in the Cypriotic form and flat and sharply keeled in the Lebanon-Israel form. Also small, granular and small dorsal scales in the Cypriotic form; large and keeled on the Lebanon-Israel. The scales of the upper surface of the tail medium-sized in the Cyprus population, whereas larger and sharply keeled in the Israel & Lebanon population.

Hi Bayram

Congratulations on this milestone. You have really reached it in record time and of course that was all to our benefit and pleasure. In a short time I have learned so much about herpetology from you and I really appreciate your contributions to this site. I never was a particular reptile lover, but since TrekNature I've steadily grown in interest and fondness of these wonderful creatures. You were a welcome injection to the site with your specialised knowledge and your amazing material. So thanks for all you have given us thus far and hopefully there will still be plenty more.

This image of the Fringe-toed Lizard just underlines my sentiments above. The lizard is razor sharp, absorbing composition, stunning yet natural colours, magic lighting through a spot-on exposure, and the not so scientific notes (with other words written so that even us plebs can understand it) from the first class scientist.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Bayram, this is such a great post of this (Schreiber’s Fringe-toed) Lizard. I've never seen one of these guys so this is a great introduction to him. I like your positioning of the lizard on the sand like this, and he very nicely pulled his tail in for a nice tight shot. The textures seen on his skin and on the sand is fabulous and I like how his colour blends right in with the sand. Congratulations on #100, this is a great post to mark it; we'll all be looking for a lot more from you.

Thanks, John

I think your contribution here is very big, my friend! You photos are of a very high quality and your notes are always interesting and education. What i want to say by this is that TN could use more members like you.

This is a lovely photo to celebrate this nice occasion with.
This Schreiber’s Fringe-toed Lizard is a rare sight on this site and is superbly presented here by you. The details are excellent and the DOF is spot-on - keeping the entire body + tail in very good focus.
Taken from a good POV, it's also a very well exposed and saturated photo.

Bravo and TFS
