Cyrtopodion (Mediodactylus) kotschyi fitzingeri (Fitzinger’s Gecko)

A medium-sized gecko with a total length to 9-10 cm. Pupils vertical. 8-12 longitudinal rows of keeled tubercles on dorsum, continuing on tail, tubercles are longer than wide; toes lack adhesive pads and slender, subdigital scales smooth. The dorsum is light to dark gray with dark zigzagging transverse stripes or maculations. The venter is whitish. Some animals are more or less uniform. The venter is often whitish but in breeding period is yellowish. Males may have 'femoral' pores in front of vent and generally smaller than females in total size.

It inhabits rocky-stony places with scanty vegetation, also seen on stone walls and buildings. Partly nocturnal, but also forages in daytime. Feeds on insects and spiders. Can change colour in accordance with the illumination state of the environment. In here photo, you can see “the mountain form” from Cyprus as being has a dark gray and blackish coloration. In “the house form” has a light gray coloration with indistinct zigzagging transverse stripes and more distinct keeled dorsal tubercles. A female lays 1-2 eggs between crevices and cracks of rocks.

The species’s range extends from S Italy and Greece to Aegean islands, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, Israel, NW Iran and the Transcaucasus region; with a vertical distribution to 2500 m. The important information on this gecko species was given by me in TN with another capture of a different subspecies.

It is represented with the subspecies Cyrtopodion kotschyi fitzingeri, endemic for Cyprus. It has typically two longitudinal, enlarged-smooth medial scale rows under the tail. According to me this feature is significant for the specific level. Because the number of the longitudinal enlarged medial scale row under the tail in all other species representatives is one.In Cyprus, local people call this species and also Turkish Gecko as "Mişaro" (in Turk. Ince Parmakli Keler).

Today, I would like to dedicate this close up capture to our friend in TN, Jane Magen (jaycee) from USA for her kind interest my herpetological captures! My dear friend Jane! Congratulations that you reached 300th posting!

hello Bayram, really nice patterns to this Gecko....lovely natural composition, TFS

Hi Bayram

Despite my gallery being somewhat dominated by birds, geckos are my favourite taxon and I have posted a few over the years I've been on TN. I must get out and find some more to shoot and share with my TN friends.

Needless to say I love this shot. We have similar spiny types here in Australia, but its a few years now since I've been to where they live.

Excellent composition and pose. Great sharpness and details. this one has a great pattern. Well done.

Chris

Mehmet

Hocam bence nefis bir kompozisyon olmuş. Ama ışıklandırma sanki düşük kalmış. Yanılıyor muyum? Elinize sağlık. Teşekkürler.
Bahadır

Bahadır'a katılamıyacağım hocam.

Very nice image Bayram!
The frame-filling, diagonal composition is exceptional!
Good sharpness but at the expense of some noise, however there is still a massive amount of detail.
Great lighting and muted colours.
Nice dedication to Jane!
Well done my friend!

Joe

Yine Kıbrıslı bir hemşerim:) elinize sağlık hocam nefis bir renk desen. Teşekkürler.

Hello Bayram,

Very nice composition. Good natural colours. As usual, very interesting note. But, I think you try to sharpen too much your pictures.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Bayram, splendid strange creature, I never see before, thanks, wonderful details and great sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Bayram,

Thank you so much for the dedication - I'm not just interested in your captures; I'm completely fascinated with them. My first thought when I saw this gecko was that they would be so well camouflaged in our rocks that we would never notice them here. I've never seen wonderful patterns like this - which you show in good detail. I love the little hands and feet. As always this gecko is positioned beautifully. Keep them coming - I keep learning more from you.

Jane

Hi Bayram,

Hello Bayram,
Great capture of another reptile from Cyprus, a Fitzinge´'s Gecko. This is well presented from a fine POV to show the dorsal patterns of this cypriotic subspecies. Nice pose and composition.
Thanks for sharing this one my friend,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Bayram, I like this very clear close up of the gecko. This composition shows a great amout of detail including the scales. Previously i disliked these sort of creatures, now i think they have a beauty which just takes time to appreciate. TFS. Murray.

Ciao Bayram,
Grazie,

Hello Bayram,
Wow, this little one looks quite a chubby fellow and I love its beautiful pattern and colours - it reminds me of some old and beautiful tapestry (but these were of course based on patterns from nature!). Great focus, sharp details and a very fine composition too.
Well done!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hallo Bayram
Excellent details and interesting colours in this photo. The texture and patterns show well, and the texture looks very rough. The focus is good and the details are well displayed. I like the pose, showing the shape of this reptile in its full potential. This gecko hands looks like stars. In my personal opinion the geckos we have in our home are not nice. They are quite see through, and we quite often see them on the ceiling waiting to catch some insects. I remember when my youngest son was about 3 years old, we woke up one night with the sound of him shooting like crazy with his toy machine gun. He could not handle these geckos and was really on the war path trying to kill the one that was against his bedroom wall. Needles to say, he would not go to bed until we removed it. Pity for him, his gun did not do the job. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Abrazo Bayram.

Hello Bayram,
Impressive photo of this Gecko.
Despite of some noise in the upper part of the photo, a very beautiful photo with great sharpness and natural colours. Good diagonal composition.
Regards,
Peter

Bayram,

Excellent detail and clarity of the subject shown. Very informative too.
