This was the biggest moth I ahd ever seen. Later on I found out it is some kind of a Hawk moth

Hello Don,
Yes its a Hawk Moth, which is one of the bigger groups, and it has obviously invaded your study for a bit of light reading. You have an excellent camera, but I think on this occasion you have left the camera to do the focussing for you. Autofocus is good for general pictures but has limitations in close-up work like this. It seems that the lens has focussed more on the books than on the insect. With macro work, I invariably use manual focus, so I can be sure I have the real subject as sharp as I can get it. Thanks for posting.

the species you photographed is Theretra alecto (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae).
