Malpolon monspessulanus insignitus (Montpellier Snake) (A young female)

A slender bodied narrow headed snake with a total length up to 200 cm. The head is slightly distinct from the neck, with a sharply convex profile. The large eyes have a round pupil and golden iris with a dark periphery. There is typically a longitudinal concave furrow between the eyes. The body scales are smooth and/or weakly grooved and they are ordered into 17-19 rows at midbody. The dorsum of adults greenish-gray brown and without maculations; in young, gray or brown, with small blackish blotches, the edges of which are lined in white. The venter is whitish or yellowish-white, with black or gray spots.

Its range includes Cyprus, S Europe, Turkey, N Africa and W Asia; with a vertical distribution to 1500 m. In Cyprus, can be encountered everywhere. The race inhabited in Cyprus and adjacent mainlands is M. m. insignitus, whereas the nominotypic form ilves in Morocco, Spain, Portugal, France and N Italy.

It's a pleasure to watch your gallery grow. You also make me want to see these interesting reptiles in Cyprus one day. Your picture of Malpolon tells me something I did'nt know about the species: it forms insular races. Good portrait!
I'm highly honored by your dedication, thank you for your nice gesture! It's true I am a biologist like you but I worked on the behaviour of birds (mating systems): snakes only come my way as predators of fledglings!
