Eumeces schneiderii (Schneideri’s Skink) [in Turk. Sarı Kertenkele, in Cyp. Turk. Keçemen] (A portrait of an adult male )

Dear friends, my decision on “the taking a break until everything be back in peace!” is continuing, however today I wished to say “good bye” my all TN friends -(because I love everybody as a family like a child who has natural intimacy and instincts)- since tonight I will fly to my homeland, Cyprus, to realize our traditional annual family meeting.

In this way, I dedicated this post to my all TN friends, stating my special thanks for all everything.

A large, stout skink with a total length up to 42 cm. Rostral plate does not contact external nares; the lower eyelid with scales; ear opening big and oval shaped with 3-6 triangular shaped scales at anterior edge. A striking longitudinal orange band usually present on the flanks. The venter is light yellow. Inhabits bushy open places with rocky substrates, and gardens. Hides under stones, in holes and burrows dug by itself or other burrowing animals. Feeds on insects, other invertebrates and lizards. Its range extends from N Africa, Anatolia, Cyprus Island to W and Middle Asia with a vertical distribution to 1800 m. In Cyprus, the nominate race (?), E. schneiderii schneiderii, an endemic subspecies (species?), lives. This species faces a serious threat of extinction in the island.

The recent increase in unplanned urbanization in Cyprus, gradually destroys the habitats of all amphibian and reptile species. A serious decrease in springs and creeks is evident within the region, which has rather arid summers. In addition to these factors, the frequent killing of this lizard species, which are thought to be dangerous by local people, make it susceptible to extinction, I urge the Environmental Protection Office of NC and SC to increase regulations and take legal steps towards the protection of flora and fauna of Cyprus (please refer to “European Union habitat and species directive (1992)”, Annexes II and IV). Furthermore, we need to inform and educate the people of Cyprus in their responsibility to protect the unique habitat of Cyprus for many generations to come.

Hello Bayram,
An excellent close portrait of this beautiful Skink, Schneideri's. The deatils of the head and front part of the skink are sharp and seen from an excellent POV.

Hello Bayram,
When I looked at this thumbnail quickly I thought it was a fish! ;-) Instead it was a beautiful Lizard with a striking orange band along its body. Excellent capture showing the fine details of this beautiful animal. Great focus on the eye and very sharp details. Well composed too.
The spread of urbanization is so destructive, I wish it could be controlled with the future in mind! Nevertheless I hope you have a lovely holiday on Cyprus with your family!

I will critique your image and I do respect your opinion.
It is a very good photo. The POV and DOF are all right. Often the DOF is an issue in photos of lizards. The focus is on the head; can't see anyting blurred. Very good details. I think you can use this very well for your scientific approach. Finally an excellent photographer's note, as always.

I am glad that you are back with us all.
This is an excellent, sharply exposed and detailed shot. The colour on the side of the Skink really draws in the eye and alerts it to the wonderful shiny texture of the skin.

Looking through your gallery, I saw this beautiful Skink - I have seen something very similar in a zoo, some time ago, but didn't remember its name, now I know it thanks to you ! :-) It's really a beautiful animal, with this red line standing out so nicely on the grey body. Excellent details, nice natural colors, beautiful composition and POV. Very well done !
