Mauremys rivulata (Western Caspian/Stripe-necked Terrapin) (in Turk. Çizgili Kaplumbağa) [A portrait]

The detailed information of the species was given in another (-whole-) capture of the species from Asidere (Metehan, Nicosia). Thus, no more additional knowledge is present here.

This terrapin species is a relatively small-sized with the maximum carapace length up to 25 cm, carapace ankylosed to plastron; axillar and inguinal plates present. The head is relatively small with pointed snout terminating in a vertical edge. The round tympanum is of about the same diameter as the eye. The carapace is low-domed and oval-shaped, slightly wider posteriorly; vertebral and costal plates with distinct central keels in young, gradually become indistinct in older specimens. The head, neck and limbs with distinct longitudinal yellowish stripes. The sexual dimorphism is expressed by the longer and thick-based tails, slightly concave plastron and longer fore-feet claws in males. Its range extends from Balkans to W & S Turkey, W. Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus and some Aegean islands, such as Crete.

In Northern Cyprus, Stripe-necked Terrapin is present being only in around the Küçük Kaymakli and Metehan (Kermia), Kanlidere and Asidere (Pedios) streams (Nicosia).

Ps. This species (M. rivulata) has been treated as a subspecies of M. caspica for many years. Presently, it is considered to be a monotypic species [The image were scanned from a diapositive] .

And finally, today I would like dedicate this photo to our joint friend, Howard Shirley (gerbilratz) from UK, for his kind interest my herpetological captures. Thank you Howard! Cheers,

Hello Bayram,

Very nice picture of this terrapin. Good composition and POV. I did a WS to improve the sharpness and to reduce the noise, but you have to wait tomorrow to see the result :-).
Cheers,
Mariki

Great and superb work, very well shot

Ho Bayram,
A good portrait of our friend in "soft-focus" style, however the "softer" and greenish BG is rather nice. And a good dedication, I must add!
Mehmet

Hi Bayram

Lovely close-up with nice colour. The OFF BG suits the subject well.

James

Hello Bayram,
Nice portrait of this Terrapin. Good POV,DOF and composition. The colours are a bit soft and the BG noisy. So I did a WS. I hope you like it.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Bayram. We have some Terripins in the local river i must admit i was a bit surprised to see them one eve in the sun on a log . this is a very close up shot showing all the detail in his skin.as always good notes too. well done TFS.
Nick..

rivulata için güzel bir makro. az da olsa detay kaybı ve noisy var ama slayt taraması dikkate alınınca oldukça iyi. notlar her zamanki gibi çok güzel ve bilgi verici. eline sağlık. iyi geceler.
