Cyclamen Persicum

We found these pretty cyclamen in Paphos on calcarious rocks where they grew in tiny crevices. Both flowers and leaves are relatively small. In Sweden we only have Cyclamen as a pot plant and it is lovely to see it in the wild and this species is obviously quite common in the Middle East. I’ve now learnt that this is the parent species of the florists’ Cyclamen.

“Cyclamen persicum grows wild in south western Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, the Greek islands of Rhodes, Karpathos and Crete, Algeria and Tunisia.
It grows in a variety of habitats: maquis, garigue, open scrub, rocky hillsides, abandoned olive groves, or in woodland. It grows from Sea Level to 1200m (3,940 ft). It is found growing on graves in the old Turkish Cemetery in Rhodes Town, and in snow on the top of the Golan Heights in Israel.
The flowers are generally white (sometimes a soft pink, or with a pink flush) with a deep pink or crimson-magenta zone at the base of each petal, however there is an albino form, which is found in the east of its range, and a form with deeper pink or almost cerise flowers is found in two populations on the island of Karpathos. The petals vary between 20-37mm (0.8 - 1.5 inches) long and 10-18mm (0.4 - 0.75 inches) wide.
The flowers appear between December and early May.
Extract from the Cyclamen Society.

Nice shot, just curious how they grow out of a rock face with no soil.

Hello Ulla,
Très joli bouquet de cylamens. Interesting to have taken them in the wild. Good composition, nice light and natural background. Cyclamens are quite difficult to photograph. Thank's for this lovely shot

Hi Ulla,

This is so pretty - looks like a mural painted on the wall. The shades of lavendar and the shapes of the flower are beautiful. Lovely leaves as well.

Jane

Hola Ulla,
Bonita composición de esta planta con sus florecillas tan raras para mí. Saludos

Hi Ulla.
I love your charming shot and pictured plants so much. Amazing subject, impressive combination of the BG and beautiful flowers. Colours and exactness of plant reproduction impress the imagination. Superb refined work.

Hi Ulla,
These flowers are one of my favorites and I always enjoy seeing an image of them. They were abundant down in the woods by my house but the higher temperature has now made them disappear.Well noticed as they stand out very well on the neutral rock...the colours are true and natural.
Regards, David

It is always amazing Ulla to see flowers that grow in such harsh places. Nature will never stop to amaze me. They are beautiful and delicate and so is this capture of them. Details and exposure are very good. This is a much interesting post. Thanks,
Claudine
