Hottentot Fig – Carpobrutus edulis

In my previous post of a White-faced Heron there were leaves similar to those above and I assumed them to be of this species. They were not in flower while we were in Australia and I’ve now found out that they are an Australian species called Carpobrutus glaucescens, which is very similar to the above that was captured in Cyprus.

“Carpobrotus is a genus of ground-creeping plants, with succulent leaves and large daisy-like flowers. The name refers to the edible fruits. It comes from the Greek "karpos" (fruit) and "brota" (edible).
There are about 25 species in this genus, having a disperse distribution worldwide. They are mostly South African, but there is one species in South America, another in California and Oregon[1], and four in Australia (NSW Flora Online). Common names include ice plant and pigface." From Wikipedia

Hi Ulla

Lovely composition with great detail. The bee is an excellent addition.

These plants were introduced to the UK in the C19th and have become a real pest on the S and W coasts - so much so that a couple of months ago it was made illegal to buy, sell or plant them.

Hello Ulla!
I love your DOF here!
Very fresh fine colors, the green and the pink is so good together.
Very sharp and a lot of fine details are visible, the bee (?) is also a fine attraction here. Good vertical composition.
Still a few months until I can take that kind of pictures up here, but on my trip to the Canary Isles in a month I hope to see something like this...
Well done!
Regards, Jon.

Merhaba Ulla, it is always a pleasure, seeing a Carpobrotus flower in full bloom among those succulent leaves, but this one also has a bee in the middle! Very "sunny" close-up in fine focus and plenty of detail, my friend, thank you indeed for this heart-warming composition.
Yours,
Mehmet

This bee looks like it is drowning in the flower - or it's drunk from the pollen!!
Good capture Ulla, and the pink flower reminds me of Ice flowers - yes, I've now read your notes - it's an Ice plant.
