Deadly Robber

This is the Robber-Fly doing what it does best. The short, strong proboscis is used to stab and inject victims with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which paralyze and digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied meal through the proboscis. Many species have long, tapering abdomens, sometimes with a sword-like ovipositor. Others are fat-bodied bumblebee mimics.

Adult robber flies attack other flies, beetles, butterflies and moths, various bees, dragon and damselflies, ichneumon wasps, grasshoppers, and some spiders.

Hi Steve,
Now you're talking :}
Excellent macro, a lovely POV of the action here mf.
Nice sharp detail with very good color, light, and composition..
Sorry to hear of the 400D's demise, I'm certain the Canon 5D will fit the bill for your landscape work, with its full frame quality.
Very well done,
Howard

Hello Stephen,
an admirable picture of the robberfly.
The point of view has been well selected with respect to the lateral view of the fly and
the fact that the fly is completely surrounded by the light background of the rock.
So, it stands out clearly!
Focus, sharpness and detail-richness are superb.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Stephen,
a very nice landscape, sorry I mean a great macro-shot.
This is a first class macro with great sharp details and DOF, the whole insect in focus and still the BG in OOF.
Well composed with nice POV.
Great work.

Hello Stephen,

Very nice picture of this robber-fly. Excellent composition and sharpness. You took advantage of the very good light and a nice clear support. I could see this fly for the first time few days ago, but unfortunately for me, it was enjoying its meal on a tree in the shadow.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Stephen,

Although the Robber Fly is not the most beautiful insect, I love this wonderful image.
