Akamas Peninsula – Cyprus

During our stay on Cyprus we stayed on the outskirts of Paphos at the edge of the Akamas peninsula as we wanted to get away from the tourist areas in the south. We had time to explore the highlands and the coastlines. This shot shows part of the north coast where a coastal path winds along from the popular site of Aphrodite’s Bath. The birdlife was pretty good here while the flora was more abundant along the south coast. Unfortunately there are several plans for exploitation of this area which hopefully can be stopped as this part of Cyprus is now a member of EU.

The following is an extract from the web site of the CYPRUS CONSERVATION FOUNDATION (CCF) whose overall aim is to promote environmental awareness within Cypriot society through educational and sensitisation programmes, thereby protecting the island’s natural resources and heritage, and facilitating the island’s harmonisation with European environmental legislation and standards.

“The Akamas peninsula, as described in the Conservation Management Plan of World Bank/EU, covers about 230 km2 and is located on the western tip of Cyprus. It is an area of great natural beauty unaffected by development. The uniqueness of the area for Cyprus, and for the whole of the Mediterranean, is centered on its precious ecology. The diversity of flora and fauna in this relatively small area is truly impressive. Rare endemic plants grow there and foxes, snakes and other reptiles as well as many types of migratory birds live in Akamas or use it in their movements. Out of a total of 128 endemic plant species of Cyprus, 39 are found in the Akamas peninsula.
On a European level, Cyprus including the Akamas area has been identified as one of the 22 areas of endemism in Europe and one of only three European areas holding two or more restricted-range species of birds.

The Akamas issue is the story of a national park that hasn't happened. Indecisive governments and greedy entrepreneurs who manipulated the local population have succeeded so far in preventing the permanent statutory protection of the area.”

Hi Ulla.
It is a funny a bit that pictured by you landscape is very native for our places. Amazing view, perfect POV and excellent exposure of the picture. I like the soft lighting. It seems to me the day was sunny. However, colours of the shot, sharpness and details of the image are wonderful. Bravo and best wishes.

Hi Ulla

A very beautiful shot of this coeast from Cyprus. I've heared it's very beautiful there.
The view from this high POV is excellent and the composition is well managed.
The small golf creted down there looks very interesing in means of wildlife, too :)
The exopsure is well managed and the presentation is nice.

A very pretty scene. Living in the desert I don't get to see many like this. A beautiful cove and I like the composition.

This is a lovely secluded cove with beautiful clear aqua water. I do notice a couple of things First the image lost some saturation probably in the upload. Also the image needs to be rotated to the right. I am surprised that the wide angle lens distortion is so apparent... the curve of the horizon. I have a problem with that too with my wide angle lens. Some enhancing software has ways of fixing it.

Hi Ulla, a beautiful view, wather is so clear! I am happy to learn that there are still unspoilt part left on Cyprus. I was there many, many years ago. The light here is great and your perspective is wonderful. Great colours.
