Hardun Agama - Laudakia stellio cypriaca

This is one of several sub-species of Laudakia stellio and it is endemic to Cyprus. It was originally classified as Agama stellio, but today it is more commonly known as Laudakia stellio.

It can reach 30 centimeters in length when mature and has very strong legs, which are suited for climbing on rocky surfaces. This one is a male showing blue scales on head and body while the females are greyish-brown in colour. Its tail is tapering and scaly. It feeds on insects such as beetles, crickets, ants and spiders.

This species was quite common on the calcareous rocks just below the hotel where we stayed in Paphos. These rocks had plenty of crevices and holes for them to hide in. I also found one climbing a tree up in the hills of Akama. They are pretty shy and were hard to get close to. This shot was taken from a distance of about 8 meters with the camera handheld.

Hola Ulla,
Curiosa especie muy bien detallada con buena definición, gracias por compartirla. Saludos
José Ramón

Hi Ulla,
Great image of this lizard, well done seeing they are so shy. The image is of good quality taking into consideration that you were so far away from you subject and the camera was hand held. Congratulations.
Cheers,
Debbie

Hi Ulla

What a splendid shot of this charming little reptile from Cyprus!
The colors on it are fantastic and the POV from where you took this shows them nicely. The pose in which you captured it is also great!
I've seen agamas in real life, but only in enclosers, not in the wild...it must be a blast :) You are lucky :)

Cheers and TFS

Hello Ulla,
agames are really different than lizards. They seme to be more rockbound than lizards. You have taken a nice picture here of this species. I've never seen agames in Europe, but I reckon Cypres is one of the nearest places to be able to see one...
Regards, JAcob

Hi Ulla,
Very good capture of this reptile!
I like the close aproach you were able to do, and the pose of the animal catched.
Very good details and their textured skin.
Great the contrast against the rocks.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Ulla,
A strange lizard. This one looks like wearing a blue shirt. Nice shot and well exposed under bright sunlight. POV and composition also great. TFS,
JC

Hola Ulla.
Un reptil bastante extraño, con preciosos detalles.
Buena nota.
Saludos, JL.

The features of this lizard endemic to Cyprus are very well captured in this shot, Ulla.
I guess its colours are attuned to the need for camouflage amid these rocks because it merges well with the background.
Thanks and take care.

Hi Ulla,

They are shy, it's not an easy shot, thanks
