Cyprus Grayling - Hipparchia cypriensis

This species is an endemic species to Cyprus. It is common and emerges in April. We found it by the coast but by early summer when it gets hot, it disperses to higher altitudes. They congregate in large numbers in the mountains during the summer months but return to the lower regions in the autumn.

The Cyprus Grayling is very similar to the Grayling (Hipparchia semele) which is widely distributed throughout Europe, but not present in Cyprus.

Hi Ulla

An excellent macro capture of this endemic Cyprus citizen. The earthy colours of the butterfly mix so well with the surrounding environment of the rocks speckled with the algae blotches.

A lovely composition with the insect enjoying sufficient space on the left to peer into. The colours are very natural and well balanced, the details are great, and the slight coloured rocks worked well as a BG while it made the butterfly stand out perfectly from the scene. The lighting was perfectly controlled since you had to cope with the diverse and varying contrasts between the bright rocks and the dark subject.

Very well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Ulla,
thank you for this nice gift. You know, I like the Satyrinae. Here, you present an endemic probably shown for the first time at TN. Hipparchia in bright sunlight are mostly very shy - sometimes they open their wings sun-basking on the ground. Unfortunately, my THEME on Satyrinae is complete (max. 100 pictures). But I think to create a new one in the near future.
Best wishes

Hello Ulla,

Nice macro of this endemic species... We can see how easy for him to use its camouflage amongst those rocks! You managed very well on the exposition in order to let us see all the fine details of the wings! You also got an excellent pov!!!

Hi Ulla

It's always terrific when one has the chance to see an endemic species...it will most propably enrich his/her knoledge of biodiversity :)
This too is a lovely post with this beautiful species well captured.
The pattern on this butterfly's wings really looks a bit similar to the rocks behind it, making it fit the scenary well.
The colors are also charming and the POV is excellent, as well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Excellent capture of this butterfly native to Cyprus, Ulla.
Your well chosen point of view gives a glimpse of the colours and designs on its upper wings too with that sharp dark eye-spot on the yellowish background.
TFS.

Hi Ulla,
a very nice close-up of this beautiful endemic butterfly.
Well composed wiht nice light and good details.
Well done.

Hoppas att fjärilar kommer igång snart men det är nog lite
tidigt än, det är bara de allra tidigaste som syns.

Fantástica mariposa con un color genial apta para camuflarse entre las piedras.
Una nota estupenda.
Saludos, JL.

Hi Ulla,
The light seems to be very harsh, but you had managed it very nicely. Nice shot. Greatly executed.

Hello Ulla
I've been out and too busy for too many days.
How many pictures I'd missed!
This is a really interesting capture for I didn't even know about this kind of Grayling.
You did a great shot which let us see the pattern of its wings perfectly. Though I am so fool... which is exactly the difference with Hipparchia semele? They are so similar!
Thank you very much for this wonderful contribution and beautiful picture.
Greetings
Maite
