Pyramidal Orchid – Anacamptis pyramidalis

I’ll now post a couple of orchids we found on Akamas, Cyprus. The first one is a sun-loving orchid which we found on lime-rich soil in an arid environment amongst stones and bushes, whilst it normally prefers open grasslands. Where found it normally occurs in large numbers. The slender stalks can grow up to 45 cm and it has short leaves. The flowers can vary in colour from red, violet to purple. They are shaped so that they can be pollinated by butterflies seeking nectar.

It can be found at high altitudes, up to 2000 metres, as well as on calcareous sand dunes. This orchid occurs in southern and central Europe, North Africa and western Asia. In Sweden it is rare.

This shot was taken with the camera handheld from a distance of about half a meter, it has been cropped slightly and sharpened. I’ve used NeatImage for the background.

Very fine and sublte colours for this Pyramidal Orchid. The petals look like they would be of wax. Nice blurred background.

beautiful capture of the orchid. I may be mistaking, but I think it has mostly a more red/purple colour in the Netherlands.
The image is very nice and sharp by the way and has a great depth of field. Compliments!
