[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
CICONIIFORMES (Leyleksiler [TR], Storks, Herons and relatives [EN]) is forth order of Turkish birds and it consists of a variety of large, long-legged wading birds with large bills: storks, herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills. These birds are divided into six families, i.g. Ardeidae (Herons), Balaenicipitidae (Shoebill), Scopidae (Hammerkop), Ciconiidae (Storks), Threskiornithidae (ibises) and Cathartidae (New World vultures) which last family was traditionally accepted a family in the Falconiformes; however, recent ornithologists place this family in the order Ciconiiformes). Three of these families, i.g. Ardeidae (9 spp.), Ciconiidae (3 spp.), Threskiornithidae (3 spp.), are represented in Turkiye by 15 species.
Subject of today’s post is Egretta garzetta Linnaeus, 1766 – Küçük Beyazbalıkçıl, Küçük Ak Balıkçıl [TR], Little Egret [EN] from the family Ardeidae. E. garzetta is a small-middle sized egret with lenght of 55-65 cm and wingspan of 88-95 cm. Its plumage is all white with a slim, pointed black bill, greyish face, long and black legs, yellow or greenish-yellow feet. Two long nape plumes and gauzy plumes on the back and breast of adults appear in spring for the breeding season.
It ranges in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and it was also introduced in Americas. It hunts fishes, frogs and aquatic invertebrates in shallow water of rivers, lakes, water channels, lagoons and sometimes seashores.
E. garezetta is a resident bird in some wetlands in Central and Eastern Mediterranean, also breeds in middle and southern parts of Central Anatolia, south of Marmara, south of Ege (Aegean), Kızılırmak Delta in Central Karadeniz (Black Sea) and east of Eastern Anatolia. In other regions of Turkiye and Cyprus, it is passage visitor. One of the largest colonies is observed in Bird Paradisea in the Lake Manyas (Balıkesir Province).

Egretta garzetta Linnaeus, 1766 – Küçük Beyazbalıkçıl: Boy 55-65 cm, kanat açıklığı 88-95 cm. Orta büyüklükte, tamamen beyaz bir balıkçıldır. Boynu uzun ve ince, gagası ince, koyu ve sivri, yüzü gridir. Ensesinden uzun ve ince süs tüyleri uzanır; ilkbaharda gösterişli sırt tüyleri de ortaya çıkar. Bacakları siyahtır ve parlaktan mat sarıya ya da yeşilimsi-sarıya dönen parmakları çok belirgindir ve uçuşta göze çarpar. Sığ sular, yavaş akan nehirler, kanallar, göller ve lagünlerde bulunur. Balık, kurbağa ve su omurgasızları ile beslenir. Akdeniz’in güneydoğusunda kışlamaya, orta kısımlarına ve Ege’nin güneyinden iç kesimlerine kadar da kışlamak için ve sürekli yerleşime; Orta Anadolu’nun güneydoğusu, Ege’nin güney ucu, Orta Karadeniz’in kuzeyi, Van Gölü’nün güneyi, Marmara’nın güneyi ve Doğu Anadolu’nun doğusuna sadece üreme için bulunur.

A beautiful in-flight shot. The position is remarkable - wings vertical and head and legs perfectly horizontal. The greys and whites are wonderful against the blue skies. Superb details of the entire bird. Really picture perfect.
