Rana bedriagae (Levantine Frog/Marsh Frog)

It is a middle-sized robust frog with a maximum length of 15 cm (average 7-10 cm), males are smaller than females. Head is large, triangular, with large prominent eyes with widely elliptical, horizontal pupils. Rounded eardrum is large and distinct. Extremities are relatively long, toes are distinctly webbed. The coloration is very variable. Dorsum colour varies between brownish and greenish, with scattered mostly rounded dark brown to dark green spots of irregular size, a common feature is the presence of light mid-dorsal stripe. Extremities bear distinct dark spots, which can form cross-bands on the hind legs. Venter usually dirty white or yellowish, frequently with small, dark markings; in some, the belly is reddish (In R. b. caralitana known from the SW and Central Anatolia Regions of Turkey). Vocal sacs of males are dark grey.

It is strongly aquatic, inhabits lakes, pools or slowly flowing streams with much vegetation. Stays in close proximity of water bodies and prefers low plains or marshes. Sometimes is seen in strong currents. A gregarious and diurnal species, but can forage also in the nighttime. Food spectrum comprises various invertebrates, and, occasionally, also small vertebrates. A female lays 5,000-10,000 eggs as several masses either between aquatic plants or directly into open water. Although common in majority of suitable habitats, it is locally endangered by water pollution and anthropogeneous changes of habitats.

The species is widespread along the Aegean coast and the southern part of the Anatolian highland (Turkey), Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Iraq and Cyprus with a vertical distribution up to 2500 m.
In Northern Cyprus, this species is abundantly encountered in the lakelets Geçitköy (Kyrenia) and Gönyeli (Nicosia), in wetlands around Lefke (near the boundary of Greek Side in the western of the country, Nicosia), and it was also detected in the spring waters at the high elevations (800-1000 m) of Kyrenian Mountain Range around Lapithos.

Ps. Lake Frogs in the Near East were long time suggested to belong to the widely distributed Rana ridibunda (Common Marsh Frog). Recently some scientists proved that these populations are distinctly different species distinguished from Rana ridibunda with its characteristic vocalization and especially having distinct dark cross-bands on the hind legs.

And finally I would like dedicate this photo to our joint friend, Silvio Sorcini (Silvio2006) from Italy.

Hi Bayram!
This frog looks really strange in colouration! It looks more typical like some toad species (colours like in Bufo viridis or B. calamita) than in other Rana species. I have never seen it before. As I see I have to visit Cyprus soon, a lot of very interesting creatures live there! ;)
All the best my Friend!
Radomir

hi Bayram,
yes today we are neighbour, this is another great picture from your culture, great brightness and colours, bravo

Merhaba Bayram Hocam. Nefis bir görüntü. Kurbağanın gözleri özellikle çok net ve sevimli. Elinize sağlık.
Bahadır

Selam Hocam harika netlik ve nefis bir kuyruksuz kurbağa. Desen gerçekten Bufo viridis in lekelerini andırıyor.

Hello Bayram,
The sharpness and deatails in this fine capture of Rana bedriagae is superb. I also like the composition and POV a lot.
Another reason to return to Cyprus!
Thanks for sharing this beauty, my friend,
Ivan

Merhaba hocam, türü biraz tombul fotoğraflamışsınız galiba (bks Cicindela :). Netlik, renkler hepsi yerli yerinde. Alttür düzeyinde bir farklılaşma yok değil mi Kıbrısta?

Hi Bayram,

When I was a child I loved frogs and toads. All we have here in Tucson are poisonous Colorado Frogs - not at all lovable. This is wonderful. Once again -I love the eye. What amazing detail!

Hi Bayram

A very beautiful shot and an excellent presentation of this species - Rana bedriagae.
I'm not at all surprised that people long though of this as being part of Rana ridibunda...it really dons look very much alike. Actually, i have seen quite a few ridibundas with pronounced stripes on their hind legs. Now for the vocal part, i understand it's a very good way to tell species apart...it's a technique we are just starting to learn here :)
Anyway, letting the biology aside, you image is very sharp and neat, with an excellent DOF that keeps the entire frog in very good focus.
Nice light and very beautiful, natural colors, too.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

A good and crisp capture of our wet friend Bayram, sitting contendedly on our eternal mosses! Some reflections from the skin might suggest the use of a diffuser while illuminating but it takes some time to prepare.
Cheers,
Mehmet

silvio will be pleased to see this dedication, good details captured, the texture of the skin of this amphibian is visible clearly, liked the pov and the composition,

Hi Bayram

Excellent image. Great detail on the frog - especially the eye. I also like the sphagnum in the BG - it provides a great contrast.

Hello Bayram,
Excellent capture of this chubby frog! Excellent focus on the eye, sharp details and fine colours. Well composed and a very good note too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hi Bayram,

Another wonderful photo, reminds me very much of the Northern Leopard Frog that we have here, Rana pipiens. Our Leopard Frog likes to wander though, and is sometimes found a fair distance away from water in grassy meadows and prairies.

Thanks,
John

Hello Bayram,

This frog looks then bigger than it is really! You got a great POV and managed very well the exposition... I like very much all the details you are offering us here!

Great notes too!

Bye and TFS!

Michel
