Cistus salvifolius (Salvia Cistus, Sageleaf Rockrose) [in Turk. Beyaz Çiçekli Laden]

I photographed this showy-beautiful flower with yellow star during our herpetological trip to Cyprus near the Kantara Castle (Kyrenian Mountain Range, N. Cyprus). By the way thanks a lot to Ori (fragman) for ID.

Hoping that you like this shot!

Cistus> is a genus of flowering plants in the rockrose family Cistaceae, containing about 20 species. They are perennial shrubs found on dry or rocky soils throughout the Mediterranean region, from Morocco and Portugal through to the Middle East, and also on the Canary Islands. The leaves are evergreen, opposite, simple, usually slightly rough-surfaced, 2-8 cm long; in a few species (notably C. ladanifer), the leaves are coated with a highly aromatic resin called labdanum. They have showy 5-petaled flowers ranging from white to purple and dark pink, in a few species with a conspicuous dark red spot at the base of each petal., and together with its many hybrids and cultivars is commonly encountered as a garden flower. The common name rockrose is applied to the species, a name also shared by the related genera Halimium, Helianthemum and Tuberaria, all in the family Cistaceae. They are thermophilous plants, which require open, sunny places. As with many other Cistaceae, the species of Cistus have the ability to form mycorrhizal associations with truffles (Tuber) and are thus able to thrive on poor sandy soils or rocks.

Cistus species are the only host of Cytinus hypocistis, a small parasitic plant that lives on the roots and is noticeable only for a short period of time when in flower. The presence of the parasite does not seem to hurt the host population. Cistus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Coleophora confluella and Coleophora helianthemella.

Several research groups have a special extract of the rockrose (C. incanus tauricus) can show that the propagation of the virus flu viruses (influenza) significantly inhibits in vitro without resistance. Possibly, this research to a new treatment for the flu virus, including bird flu. The effectiveness in humans, however, with scientific studies have not yet been established.

Cistus salvifolius is a species of rockrose. This is a showy wildflower native to southern Europe and parts of Asia and North Africa. It has spreading stems which may approach a meter in height and are covered in clumpy hairs. The oval-shaped green leaves are 1 to 4 centimeters long and have wrinkled light-colored edges. The inflorescence holds one or more round flowers, each petal white with a yellow spot at the base. The stamens are also yellow and the anthers shed abundant yellow pollen.

Hallo Bayram
Another beautiful flower taken during your trip. It is actually such a plain flower but is really a pleasure to look at. The yellow in the middle creates a sunny and joyful feeling, no wonder the tiny black insects are enjoying themselves on it. I must add the white and yellow adds to highlight the tiny creatures. Once again the unopened blossoms caught my eye. A most pleasurable image to look at.
Kind regards
Anna
ps. Thanks for the message you gave to your students on my behalf.

Hello Bayram,
Lovely capture of this beautiful Cistus. If I remember correctly are these white flowers much smaller than those on the pink flowering Cistus? We don't have these here up the north and for me they equal warmth and sunshine!! This is a very nice composition showing great details and lovely colours.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

This is so perfect, it almost looks artificial. Beautiful photo Bayran - Regards Betsie

Bonjour Bayram,

Hello Bayram,
Nice to see you use your photographic skills on flowers too. We saw this species of Rockrose in Cyprus but neither Ulla or I photographed it. Now I realise that one of us should hvae done, especially if we could achieve a sharp and well composed shot like this.
Thanks for this inspiration my friend,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Bro Bayram,

There seem to be so many lovely wildflowers in Cyprus! The white flowers with the yellow centers are very pretty and fresh looking. I love seeing the opened ones alongside the cupped and partially opened one. Beautiful shot.
