It is a tufted, long-rooted perennial, virtually stemless, the lvs. spread flat on the ground with 5-9 broadly oval and attractively bronze or purple-veined leaflets, and fls. numerous, c.1cm wide, pale creamy yellow with purple or red pencilling, on a stout, erect, hairy stalk 10-16 cm high. Pod flat, coiled into a circle 1-1.5 cm across, pale and papery with dark radiating veins near the edge. Fl. Feb-May. On exposed dry, stony or sandy ground at all levels; common along the northern strip.
