Great Tit (Parus major)
Great tits are one of the 7 Tit species of the Paridae family in Iran consisting of Sombre Tit,Caspian Tit, Great Tit, Turkestan Tit, Yellow-breasted Tit, Coal Tit and Blue Tit . their population is very good in northern mountaineous and west of Iran.
During summer, great tits tend to feed mainly on invertebrates taken from leaves, but in autumn the diet slowly changes, incorporating more seeds and fruits. By November, seeds make up a large proportion of the diet and in periods of low food availability they will enter gardens and feed on peanuts and other food provided by humans .Because of their larger size, great tits tend to feed on the ground more than other smaller tits.
Great tits nest in holes in trees, nest boxes, pipes and even letter boxes .The female lays between 6 and 11 eggs; these are incubated for up to 15 days and the young will have fledged after a further 16-22 days .
Experiments have shown that if a male Great Tit is removed from its territory, the subsequent occupation of the site by a neighbouring male can be delayed by broadcasting the song of a Great Tit from a loudspeaker. If the tape played gives only one version of the Great Tit's many songs then the site is reoccupied faster than if the tape plays a full repertoire of songs. This suggests that Great Tits with the broadest repertoire will be more successful in defending their territories, which is why they have evolved so many different songs!! |
