Cytinus hypocistis
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Cytinus hypocistis (Rafflesiaceae) is the only species of its family in Israel. It is a parasite on the roots of Cistus bushes, thus the species name. The scale-like leaves are deep pomegranate-red, which gives the species its Hebrew name. This monoecious (hermaphrodite) plant has monosexual flowers grouped together in spikes, containing five to ten flowers, where the male flowers are in center, and the female flowers in the perimeter (note open flowers on the left-hand side). In Israel we find this rare parasite in the Carmel and the Upper Galilee, and in a few locations in the Lower Galilee. Each spike is 15-20 mm in diameter. |

Hello Ishi,
Very interesting shot. This parasit plant exists also in Greece but I did not see it already. Thanks for this beautiful photo,
Catherine
very nice pic, where did u find it? Horshat Haarbaim? Ori
A beautifully executed capture of a rarely seen parasitic plant Ishi, but it is not that rare in the Aegean coastal zone, however it usually gets lost among the litter found near the bases of the abundant Cistus bushes.
