Hyraxes and elephants have a mutual origin. This frontal pose, of a podgy Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis), has taken in Ein Gedi reservation, Near the Dead Sea, may show any similarities. In the edge of miniaturization, evolution trail, Rock Hyrax weight 2-4.5kg. Males are slightly larger than females.
The forefeet are plantigrade, and the hindfeet semi-digitigrade. The soles of Hyrax feet have large, soft pads.
It has a pair of long tusk-like teeth (elongation of molars).
Rock Hyraxes live in herds of 50-100 individuals. These herds are subdivided into smaller flocks consisting of a few families and headed by an adult male. |
