Hooded Crow Cracking a Pecan Nut

Thanks to Steve Pryor for identifying this as a hooded crow, not a raven.
This may belong in the "missed opportunity" category. I noticed this bird doing something unusual, but only after I downloaded the images did I realize that it had found a pecan nut (through the lens I thought it was a stone) and took it up to a cement rooftop to crack it open and eat the nut. So I stopped photographing too soon.
In the first image, you can see the nut it found by its foot. In the center images, it picks up the nut, then flies to a rooftop, and in the last three images you can see it trying to figure out how to break it open. I either lost interest at that point, not understanding what was going on, or it was bothered by me clicking away and flew off - I don't recall.
By the way, I put my name on this image as I have found that another of my posts of duck behavior was used without my knowledge in a research paper, though I was actually given credit for the picture. |
