Avena sterilis is native to the Mediterranean, but its distributed to the temperate regions of southern Europe, northern Africa and southwestern Asia, including the Arabian peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. It can also be found naturalised in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and United States.
