Kestrel
--------
The name kestrel is given to several different members of the falcon genus, Falco. Kestrels are most easily distinguished by their typical hunting behaviour which is to hover at a height of around 10–20 m over open country and swoop down on prey, usually small mammals, lizards or large insects. Other falcons are more adapted to active hunting on the wing.

Kestrels require a slight headwind in order to hover, hence a local name of windhover for Common Kestrel.

Plumage typically differs between male and female, and (as is usual with monogamous raptors) the female is slightly larger than the male. This allows a pair to fill different feeding niches over their home range. Kestrels are bold and have adapted well to human encroachment, nesting in buildings and hunting by major roads.

Kestrels do not build their own nests, but use nests built by other species.

Nice shot of this bird! It is not very easy to make photo to kestrel even if it is a relatively common bird.
Bravo.

Hi David,

A beautiful picture of this Kestrel in a beautiful setting. The pose is wonderful on the top of what looks like some kind of cactus plant. Nice natural colors and very good details of the bird's face and plummage.

Jane

This is a male kestrel, correct? An excellent capture and i really like how you've composed the shot, including the cactus as part of the whole. It really makes for an interesting piece of work! Great job! Penny

Hello David
You have a fine shot of a Kestrel here..Lovely sharp details and very good framing to give space to the right in his field of view..compared to passerines a raptor is a very hard subject to capture..they dont come to feed you put down...every meeting is a chance one and you grabbed this opportunity perfectly.
Best Regards
Paul

Hello David,
This image drew my attention. It is a wonderful composition with the kestrel on the tip of a pine tree top with the surrounding tops reaching out towards it. the sharpness and blue sky BG are a bonus too. This deserves more credit and thanks for sharing it,
Best regards, Ivan
