Iris mariae is one of the rarest irises in Israel. It grows only in the sandy areas of the western Negev Desert and across the border in Egypt (N Sinai). It is threatened by overgrazing and unofrtunately most of its populations are located outside nature reserves. This is the southernmost and most arid Oncocylus iris.

This is amazing to see these Irises in the wild Ori.
People in temperate zones are so used to seeing them in flowerbeds and landscaped gardens,that it seems unreal to them to see this in the desert ... yet this is their natural habitat.
This is the wonder of TN ... we get to see things where they really come from ... a great educational experience.
Excellent post.

Another amazing Iris. Was Israel formerly a more wet place? Just wondering if those Irises were originally wetland plants as so many species of Iris are. Did they adapt as their habitat grew more dry? I was thinking that maybe it was wetter in Israel perhaps during or after the last ice age, might have been when the Irises could have moved in.

Great low POV, the blue sky BG really sets the flowers off. I also like the way you are showing the whole clump rather than a single flower. Sharp and well composed
