Biarum auraniticum [
Araceae] is one of a number of geophytes that bloom without leaves, before the first winter rains arrive. Note the dry soil around it! In Israel it is known only in the Heights of Golan; it is quite rare.
The structure of the flower is similar to other Arum family members, commonly known as “Jack in the Pulpit” flowers. The large colorful “leaf” is actually a spath, namely, a bract that covers the rhachis, the long yellow stalk (about 10 cm tall in this specimen) that carries the flowers around its base, as seen in the picture. |
