Colchicum antilibanoticum mutation
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Colchicum antilibanoticum, Mt. Hermon (Anti-Lebanon Mtns.) “Autumnal Crocus” (“Meadow Crocus” or “Saffron Crocus”) is a rare Colchicum species found in Israel only at the higher elevations of Mt. Hermon (part of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range). This is not a crocus (Iridaceae), but member of the Lily family (Liliaceae). As such, it should have six petals and six stamens, and in the case of Colchicum, three styles. However, this specimen has seven stamens, seven petals and four styles – an unusual mutation, indeed. For comparison I posted a "normal" specimen in the workshop.
In the picture note also see the orange nectaries in the base of the stamens. |

Dear Ishi!
As a neophyte, when I saw your beautiful picture, I thought what a magnificent crocus this is. Thanks to your notes I have learned about this species of Lily. Moreover, the picture is very pleasant and the perfect sharpness and clarity reveal rich details.
Kind regards
Markus
