| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
A female House Sparrow at the foot of the old city Ovdat (Passer domesticus).
About Ovdat (from Wikipedia):
"Avdat or Ovdat, the remains of a Nabateans road station for their caravans, is located on a mountain in the center of the Negev Desert on the road from Petra and Eilat.
Avdat (in Greek: Oboda) was a seasonal camping ground for Nabataean caravans travelling along the early Petra - Gaza road (the Darb es-Sultan) in the 3rd - late 2nd c. BCE. The town of Avdat was founded at the site in the late 1st century BCE and named after the Nabatean King Obodas who was revered as a deity and, according to tradition, was buried there (hence the name in Arabic: Abdah). Before the end of the 1st c. BCE a temple platform (the acropolis) was created along the western edge of the plataeu. Recent excavations have shown that the town continued to be inhabited by the Nabataeans continiously from this period until its destruction by earthquake in the early seventh c. CE."

Hi Shahar,
It is my guess that it is a "House Sparrow"...a common bird not normally appreciated enough to capture. You have done a very good job...a lovely pose...the subject very clear and with good detail.Nicely composed perched on the fence.Shavua Tov!

hi shahar,
took a quick look in my "birds of israel"-book and found 3
sparrow species - house sparrow (passer domesticus), spanish
sparrow (passer hispaniolensis) and dead sea sparrow (passer
moabiticus) which with 12cm is smaller than the two others
with 15cm length.
my guess is a house sparrow, too, probably a young one from this years breeding period.
anyway, wonderful clear snd sharp photo, nice colors and good
pov - i like the off-centered position of the bird.
well done & take care, thor.
