My wife and I were driving a dirt road in the desert North of Eilat, when suddenly a young Arabian Gazelle (Gazella gazella ssp. cora) crossed the road in front of us. Only a few meters after it ran a female Arabian Wolf (Canis lupus ssp. arabs). We stopped the car and watched the spectacular play for minutes as the Wolf chased its prey and the helpless adult gazelles tried to divert the wolf without success.

When the gazelle and the wolf once again passed the car within just a few meters I managed to take a photo of the wolf, but was so nervous that I forgot to zoom in! So the focal lengt used in the photo is only 7.9 mm! The result was a photo of a leaping Arabian Wolf in its natural surroundings.

Finally the wolf caught the gazelle and started to carry the prey probably to her cubs. We found the whole event very unusual as it took place at 11 a.m. in a broad daylight!

Arabian Wolf is an endangered subspecies and it is heavily persecuted in the Arab countries. The total population of the subspecies is about 600-700 individuals, of which 150 live in Israel. Arabian Wolf is protected there since 1954 and the population is stable.

Hi Pentti,
Nice view of the desert North of Eilat.
Good colours and composition.
Best, Arie

Nice image and a great note. Though you forgot to zoom in the result was not that bad. A running wolf with a nice desert landscape behind it looks great as well.
Cheers

Hi Pentti,
Thanks for sharing your photo of this wolf and your story with us. The photo while lacking detail of the wolf, gives us a true sense of his environment that he lives in and your explanation as to why you didn't zoom in is very understandable, these type of moments are very exciting.

Hi Pentti,
On this picture you fixed an unforgettable moment for you. And that makes already all the value of this picture. The end of the story is sad, but nature has its own rules.
Best regards
Anne

Pentti
the panoramic view gives us a good idea of the surrounding environment which is great. The wolf is actually airborne, great action. I learned a lot with your picture and intro TFS
