Pinacea - Cedrus libani L.
Distribution: Lebanon, Syria and Southern Turkey.
Lebanon is the southern most limit where you will find this cedar, precisely in the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. In Lebanon, it's range is from 1200 to 1900m above sea level (which doesn't stop some individuals from growing in Beirut, and even in Paris)
Cedars grow slowly and mature just as slowly. A tree won't start producing cones before it's 30th year. Each cone takes in turn 2 years to mature and release its seeds.
Cedars thrive on calcaerous soil (which constitue most of Lebanon), and need very good drainage.
Cedars can grow to be very old, hundreds of years old. |

Hello Betty, what a fantastic silhouette shot, showing also the natural environment of the cedar. I like the composition a lot. The only thing - I would remove these small twigs from the upper left corner :-) I have never known anybody from Lebanon - you are the first. I'm looking forward to see more shots from you. Greetings from Poland. Michal
Grteat pic, I love the silhouette and the beautiful opposite slopes. Thanks, Ori
