CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH AN EMPEROR

I wish to present today a large sized macro of the Vagrant Emperor dragonfly we found one night in our compound and took its pictures against the backdrop of artificial foliage inside a room.

It is a hand-held shot from the nearest possible distance permissible by Sigma 105mm macro. The purpose was to zero in on the compound eyes, thorax and the complicated network of mechanisms at the base of wings of this large sized insect.

The original shot in raw (Please see workshop) was converted to tiff at size 2048X1371. Obviously, heavy cropping was inevitable to chop it down to the size acceptable on TN. I then sharpened the image using USM at 500 with the radius of 2. Adjusted the levels very slightly and then saved it in jpeg format at the maximum size of 198KB.
Since fill flash had to be used during indoor night shooting, I had to contend with the light bouncing off the eyes and here and there off the transparent membrane of the wings. Since I do not claim to have technical expertise to deal with these aberrations at PP level on Photoshop CS2, I have left them as they are.

For information on this distinct species of the Odonata family, please refer to my two earlier posts of this insect.

Hi Ram,
I love the detail and the POV is really interesting. Very sharp details and good DOF.
regards
Matt.

Dear Ram!
This is very detailed and sharp picture. I can see "every single" ommatidium in dragonfly's eye! And bravo for so great DOF and very nice POV.
On the other hand I have to say that I do not like a BG, especially in the workshop. Maybe I am wrong but it is not a natural leaf but rather a "plastic" one :) Of course it is less important for the dragonfly but in general composition it does not look to aesthetic.
Anyway, bravo for very nice documentary photo!
Greetings,
Radomir

Hi Ram,
Awesome macro shot. Immaculate sharpness and very clear details. Good use of flash here. Amazng formations there - seems like nuts and bolts. These pictures makes us understand the intricacies of their wing mechanism and the secret behind their swift flying. Those eye bulbs are also gorgeous. Very nicely composed and presented. Kudos.
TFS.

Dear Ramthakur sir,
This picture is similar to the one posted by Murali Santhanam (called Nuts and Bolts !).
Looks like you all are going inside the insect ! while we are yet to scratch the surface ! Great level of details and this picture is illustrative to study the wings mechanism and how they are attached to the body and also the eye and its details.
Marvelous and master piece work sir.
TFS. With best regards.vab.

Hello Ram,
It is always impressive to see the eyes reproduced like that!
All over great dedtails, and with fine natural colours...
Insect is tightly framed, and in this case I don't miss the wings since there are so many other details to explore!
Greetings,
