NEW ARRIVAL

Friends, looks like the Gecko I photographed inside my house recently was pregnant, going by its slightly distended belly at that time(See here). Well, it was only about a week ago and I could be wrong.

Last night, I found a baby Gecko lounging atop the mirror frame in my bathroom. It was small (about 5cm), had fresh and tender skin and it looked back at me with its popping curious but innocent eyes without making effort to run away.
Out came my camera fitted with 105mm macro. I set the white balance to fluorescent and took a few pictures using fill flash. I had to cajole the baby to shift its position from time to time which it did reluctantly.
This picture I am posting today was taken when it slipped on to the bottom of the base of the short tube light mounted on the wall above the mirror and stayed there upside down. It is a cute little baby. I am sure you would like it.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A GECKO

Geckos range in size from 0.67 inch (17 millimeters) to 14 inches (35.6 centimeters) in length. The smallest gecko weighs about 0.07 ounce (1.98 grams). The largest gecko, which lives in rainforests, can weigh up to 1.5 pounds (680 grams). While most geckos are brown, gray, or black, a few are yellow, red, blue, orange, or green. They may be plain, or they may have stripes or spots. Colors on the head and neck may be different from the colors on the back. The nocturnal geckos, or those that are active at night, are plainer than the diurnal geckos, or those active in the daytime, which tend to have brighter colors.
Geckos usually have flattened bodies and four short limbs, or legs. Each limb has five toes. Some species have claws on each foot. Other types of geckoes have widened toe pads. These toe pads are made to allow the gecko to stick to smooth surfaces. Geckos have large eyes that are open all the time. Except for a few species, the eyes do not have movable eyelids. Instead, the eyes are protected by clear, see-through scales, or thin coatings. Geckos clean these scales regularly with their long tongues. Most geckos are nocturnal. These geckos have vertical pupils, meaning that they are positioned straight up and down, in the center of their eyes. Diurnal geckos have round pupils in the center of their eyes. Pupils are parts of the eye that allow light to enter.
Gecko skin is soft and loose and typically covered with granular, or grainy, scales that do not overlap. A few species have smooth skin. Gecko tails come in varied shapes. Many geckos have tails shaped like carrots or turnips. Some have rounder tails that are used to store food.

It sure is a beauty Ram, and you've got an excellent capture of it.
Beautifully clear details especially in the eye and mouth.
It looks very skinny.
We used to get a lot of geckos in our house in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.
There are some beautiful native geckos of New Zealand too, some of which I have posted previously, although they are very rarely seen except in the forest canopy.
I am hoping to get a permit soon from the Department of Conservation so that I can keep and breed them. Then I will have plenty to photograph whenever I like.

these seem very tame. The only lizards I've ever come across tend to scoot off.
This must be hand held from your description, so this is really good and clear under the circumstances. Very sharp throughout.

That eye is HUGH! Its a nice photo and I like that you kept it up side down as it is one of the most common way to see them. It does look young and the patterns and colours on the skin are nicely captured.

Ps, most of us run around outside looking for nature shots, I might have to try my bathroom too! hehe.

Hello Ram, I've only seen a few gecko species but they have two things I really like:
their feet and eyes. These eyes seem to have more than one pupol, but in fact I don't know how this works (and whether it is like taht at all).
Your image shows both features well. Nice to see this youngster.

Now you have even baby-geckos hat home! I was already surprised to read from you in a previous post, that they live inside the houses. May be this was the reason. Put the baby in a secure place. They know that Ram doesn't harm!

What a cute little Gecko ! His eye is particularly beautiful, really amazing. I also like the pose of the animal, with the head down - quite unusual, but looks great. Excellent details and beautiful colors. You are lucky to have them in your house - I have only some ugly spiders ! :-)

Having been away to celebrate a new family arrival and inaurgurate our status as grand-parents it is nice for me to comment on this fine shot of this considerably smaller and newer new arrival, a gecko child!
Great use of flash that details the eye beautifully (without redness!) in theis sharp and well composed appropriately upside-down shot.

Hi Ram,
Recently we heard about the new arrival in Manyee's family as she became Grandma, now Ivan says there is a new arrival and he and Ulla have become Grandparents, WHAT HAVE YOU BECOME??? ha ha ha.
Splendid shot considering the environment and the difficult lighting. The cute gecko looks beautiful and nice but probably will not be for long. Very interesting POV and you have presented it magnificently. Look at those eyes.....gorgeous. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
