THE GLAMOROUS PEST
(Protocalliphora azurea)

I would like to share another image of this glamorous yet dangerous Blue fly I photographed from various perspectives last month.
For further information on this pest that poses mortal danger to nesting birds, please go to my earlier post HERE.

Some friends have shown unusual kind of surprise over this series, especially in terms of the BG I have obtained. I am, therefore, producing the entire Exif data on this picture below for their interpretation:

Nikon D200
2007/02/22 13:28:01
RAW (12-bit)
Image Size: Large (3872 x 2592)
Color
Lens: 105mm F/2.8 D
Focal Length: 105mm
Exposure Mode: Manual
Metering Mode: Spot
1/320 sec - F/5.6
Exposure Comp.: -3.7 EV
Sensitivity: ISO 100
Optimize Image: Normal
White Balance: Auto

Flash Sync Mode: Not Attached
Color Mode: Mode I (sRGB)
Tone Comp.: Auto
Hue Adjustment: 0°

Image Comment:

The image was cropped slightly and reduced to fit TN parameters. NeatImage was used to remove the faint noise in the BG. That is all by way of PP work.

TFL and regards to all.

hello mr thakur,
so nice to see another fly from your new macro lens & the d 200. this new equipment & the limitation at your place has made a fly expert out of you, i loved the bg in all of the fly shots, its dark & gives nice contrast to the green plant & the fly, I feel that cropping the right & upper part of the shot may add to the impact of the blue fly, however this is a matter of personal taste & you know that i like tight composition in general, I am wondering what kind of posts we will be looking at once you get opportunities to shoot your fav. dragonfly & butterflies. It will surely be a treat for eyes, looking forward to more fly & cockroaches soon, till then take care & keep shooting,
Pankaj

Hello Ram,
I like this composition a lot. You also caught this fly in a very special environment and those colors, details and brilliance on the insect are superb. This plain BG is much appropriated too. Thanks for those useful notes, I followed those links and I learned a lot about this Blue Fly. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Ram, wonderful macro with splendid light and colors, great details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Ram,

Wonderful macro. I cannot believe the details on this fly which I have never heard of. He is so colorful. Love the composition and the BG.

Jane

Great macro Ram,
The fly is clear, sharp, & detailed.
The exposure and color are very good as well.
The subject stands out well from the uniform dark BG also.
It looks like you're getting the hang of that 105mm :)
Nicely done & TFS mf.

Hello Ram,
Amazing sharpness and colors. You turn that ugly fly into something of interest. Background is indeed excellent in that it provides great contrast with the pest's colors. Looking at your note, I see the -3.7 stops of exp. compensation. Where did you take the spotmeter reading? This may prove quite educational for me. Thank you and best wishes,
Hakan

Hello Ram,
Lovely sharp and well presented capture of this little beautiful muscid pest.
I especially like the POV and composition and the way the light reflected on the shiny body contrasts with the dark BG.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Ram,
Fantastic details in this great macro shot, Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ram,
a very nice close-up shot with good details and nice colours.
The exposre is good as well. The fly standout well against
the lovely coloured BG. I-m not sure about the composition,
I think the WS is just a bit better-
You handle the macro very good, I'm waiting for more.
Very well done.

Hello Ram,
A colourful creature!
Well done on the macro work, good details in the fly, and the non-intrusive background enhances the subject...
Well composed image with good lines!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Ram,

Interesting shot! Looks funny him out there on the very end, he's isolated and stands out incredibly from the background. Nice detail. I understand their dangers from your notes. I wonder if anyone has taken a photo of a horsefly because they are a real annoyance especially when they bite you!

Good job here, thank you for your critiques, I am loving the D200, best thing I've ever bought! Off to catch a train home now, see ya.

Simon

You make this fly look good.. but still...
it's a pest.. lol!
interesting composition! colors are nice and sharpness is good too.

Hello Ram !
This fly may be dangerous, but it is also very beautiful ! I love the metallic blue-green color and the red eyes. I also like the composition very much, as well as the neural blurred BG which makes the insect stand out very nicely. Excellent exposure, beautiful colors and excellent details. Very well done !

Hi Ram,
this macro shot is very good. The POV and the lighting shows off the metallic colors of this fly very well. The nutral BG makes an excellent back drop for all those bright colors. Sharpness, details and composition are excellent.
Sky

Nice colors,sharpness and background!

Hola Ram,
Bonita composición, y excelente nitidez, la suavidad de la luz logra reproducir los colores naturales de la mosca. Un cordial saludo

Hi Mr. Fly Guru.

I suppose by now you know every little fly in Riyadh on a first name basis (chuckle). The only one you did not photograph must surely be an unfound species. Unfortunately you have now returned home to India so I doubt that anyone will ever see that undiscovered species. Nah, I'm just pulling your leg, but luckily I am sure you know that without me having to say it. You have shown us an angle to Riyadh and Saudi Arabia in general that we would not have been able to see if it were not for the fact that you were based there for the last number of years and for your prolific work rate at finding all these interesting and beautiful creatures. Thanks for that my friend.

This little specimen, and in fact the complete series (hind view, frontal view, side view) was extremely well done and supplemented with very informative notes. The composition, colour, details, exposure, and brilliant BG are all well done.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
