Trithemis aurora
(Burmeister, 1839)

Sub-Order: ANISOPTERA
Super-Family: LIBELLULOIDEA
Family: LIBELLULIDAE

Found in Asia: China, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Hainan, Indonesia, India, Japan, Lao, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Viet Nam.
I found it in Saudi Arabia too!

These beautiful dragonflies are seen near the ponds and small lakes close to forest areas. The body of a male is deep pink in colour. These dragonflies are very attractive and easily noticeable. The wings are transparent with light pinkish shade. The base of hind wings has a combination of yellow and brown colours.

Here is general information on the Libellulidae family:

The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does), there still remains a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution, these are almost certainly the most often seen of all dragonflies.
The genus Libellula is mostly New World, but also boasts one of the few endangered odonates from Japan - Libellula angelina. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The related genus Plathemis includes the whitetails. The genus Celithemis contains several brightly marked species in the southern United States. Members of the genus Sympetrum are called darters (or meadowhawks in North America), and are found throughout most of the world, except Australia. Several Southern Hemisphere species in the genera Trithemis and Zenithoptera are especially beautiful. Other common genera include Tramea and Pantala.
The libellulids have stout-bodied larvae with the lower lip or labium developed into a mask over the lower part of the face.

Hi Ram,
this is one of the best dragonfly shots I'e seen for quite a bit of time.
The DOF is almost perfect; isolating the subject really well with just the wing-tips and end of the abdomen out of focus. The composition is excellant. The detail is amazing and the clarity is superb. The colours are beauitufl aswell.
Very well done,
Joey

Hello Ram,
A beautifully composed picture with respect to geometry, colours and background. Focus and sharpness are pretty good. Depth of field is rather narrow so that the end of the body and th right wingtips are abit 'soft'. A smaller aperture would have been advantageous.
Best wishes, Peter

Wonderful detail on upper body captured on this Ram. I do feel the composition is a little tight though. Shallow DOF can be use to great effect to give depth in a shot so I am not so bothered that the lower abdomen is soft only the right wings concern me. Well done.

Hello Ram
Another excellent shot of this rare spiece,Perfect details and composition,
Fantastic colors and POV, Superb shot.

Hi Ram

I must say i like this one much better that the previous :)
The upper POV here is really great and it shows this vividly colored dragonfly in all its beauty.
The details are very sharp and clear and the DOF allowed you to keep a lot more in very good focus.
The diagonal composition is also superb and i'm also very pleased with the charming blurred BG :)
Terrific work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ram,

this has to be about one of the finest macros you've displayed!
This has to be shot of the day!

The wing detail is exquisite. The clarity and use of light spot on.

Beauty in miniature for sure.

Gary

This image is outstanding Ram. The image is cropped so well and the quality is beautiful. Very impressive. Great DOF too.

Hmmm, very nice, Ram!
Judicious focusing utilising the DOF to its best advantage, excellent BG and composition and good use of flash all contribute to the production of a fine image of this dragonfly.
I think this is an immature (not fully coloured) T. aurora: the lilac red powdering becomes more intense with maturation.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Ram,
Splendid shot, with a very text book approach, focussing on the eyes. This to me is technically excellent. Add to that a very nice POV, simple but effective compo, framing, eyecatching colours and the usual exhaustive note and the posting becomes outstanding
