GREETINGS TO ALL

Friends, it is now almost certain that in a few days, I would leave the shores of Saudi Arabia for ever and return to my country India.
I know I made a ditto declaration last year too but did not, or rather, could not stick to it. There were certain obligations towards my school children that needed to be fulfilled, so I came back for another year.
Now that I am way past the retirement age and have done whatever I could for my school children, it is time for me to wind up and call it a day finally.

Life has had its challenges in Riyadh. On a lighter note, “life” is pretty wild here, but there is no “wild” life! Add to it the restrictions on photography, so all I ended up doing was shooting anything and everything “wild” that either lived within the walled compound of my building or visited it. I was lucky at times; like that female Hypocolius visiting me this winter. Other than that, all of you bore with my house sparrows and house pigeons and house flies, and house spiders, and house geckos and even house cockroaches with infinite patience.
Thank you all!

My post today is a greeting message to all, especially to my friend Loot from South Africa, who was the first person to “identify” this insect for me last year.
It is a different matter that I am still uncertain whether it is a Philanthus triangulum or a Philanthus diadema!
One thing is certain though; it is called a Bee Wolf in common parlance.

However, to know more about the controversy, please refer to my notes appended to previous images of this insect.

Hi Ram

A well composed shot with the insect sharp and detailed. The colours are also lovely.

A poignant note - it is difficult to leave the children, but life holds many other wonderful opportunities! Good Luck

James

Hi Ram,

lovely anecdotal write-up.

These's a lovely effect on the flower, the soft edges give it more dimension.
If I'm negative, I think the focus is slightly off on your bee.
The composition is good though.

Gary

Hi Ram,
Wondeful shot of this Bee Wolf, majestically sitting on a beautiful rose. Immaculate sharpness and a great POV to capture it. I particularly like this type of dorsal view - it enables to see the full dimension of the species.
It seems you are very excited about your return to India and so you should be - there is no place like ones motherland. We welcome you with open arms. And whatever constraints you said you had there regarding photography we can fairly expect now a full gamut of exploits here and some wonderful additions to you already rich gallery.
See you in India soon.

Hi Ram,
Nice shot and well seen picture. Great color saturation. Wish you a quality life back home. Also waiting for beautiful picture from India. Wish you all the best.

A very nice and gentle pastel background to set out the Bee Wolf. Pleasing to the eye. Since I have little knowledge in entomology, I have no idea of which this is...but I do seem to remember them being of the non carnivorous family....Not sure of that....Travel safely. I am thinking of a remote possibility of a visit to General Singh near his district near Ludhiana in one year.

Hello Ram,
I'm glad to hear you'll soon have the chance to go back to your wonderful country! No doubt, you've done a lot for the children and has become a lot wiser from the experience of living abroad.
I know roses are not to be admired on TN but this one is lovely and, of course, the capture of the Bee Wolf is excellent too! I like the composition very much.
TFS and all the best wishes, Ulla

Hi Ram,
You cause me a problem here! What am I to critique with the rose and the insect vying for attention in the scene?
If it's to be sharpness, I'll go for the bee, which is after all towards the centre of the frame, but that rose is just splendid, with beautiful, subtle colour and just about enough blur to create a mystic appearance. I think the fact you did not frame it all helps put more attention to the bee.
Very artistic indeed - TFS

Ciao Ram, I think it's Philanthus diadema, but I'm not sure, I'm syre that it's a wonderful composition with great sharpness, splendid colors and amazing details, bravo! very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Ram,
A rose with diadema or triangulum, nice idea to say goodby to a country. You wrote it. It wasn't easy there to take pictures. But you succeeded well in showing wonderful flies and marvellous birds. Now, I just hope, that returned to your native country you will not stop to post. There, nature is so rich and we are interested to learn from you.And also to read your interesting stories.:-)A bientôt
Best regards

Hi Ram

Thanks for the lovely "greeting message" and I am glad that finally you could make it back to your loving homeland. I am sure we are going to see some lovely "new" postings coming from that location in the months and years to come. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

This Bee Wolf sure gave you some marvellous opportunities to shoot a number of lovely photos of it. Your portfolio now definitely host some of the best photos of this insect to be found anywhere on the Internet. Especially so on your latest contribution "Just A Bee Wolf".

The rose provides an attractive and colourful addition to this posting and as such was rather beneficial to the composition. The insect though are still the main point of focus and you showed it with lovely details and colours.

Well done and TFS.
Best regards.
Loot

PS. I need to apologise for my late response to your photo, but as you probably know by now I had to spend some time in hospital while they were performing some cardiovascular tests on me. Seems like my heart wants to tell me something, but at least I am back now and hopefully the medication and the prayers of my friends will still keep me going for a good couple of years.
