Syrphid Hover Fly
Eristalinus sepulchralis

Order: Diptera
Family: Syrphidae
Genus: Eristalinus
Species: sepulchralis

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as Hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies.
As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring on flowers. The adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year; hence aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for beneficial use in biological control. Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.
About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

This is the second picture of this insect I am posting today. Luckily, I had a better photo session with it the second time on a hot afternoon when it was at its laziest. Apparently, I have tried to focus on the special feature of this hoverfly – its large mottled eyes.

Thanks for looking and regards to all.

Hi Ram,
a great shot of this weird fly.
Brilliant eyes!
Well done,
Joey

These eyes are very special indeed Ram.
Very nice macro shot, but pity focus is more on the backside/body of the fly and the eyes are a bit out of focus field.
Warm regards, Harry

A great macro of this pretty drone fly Ram.
Good POV and plenty of interesting detail with good colour.
Excellent job.

Hello Ram,
Another great shot of this special-eyed Hoverfly. Fine POV with most of the fly razor sharp and the visible eye looking like an over-ripe grape. Superb detail and lighting, set in a fine composition.
TFS and best wishes,
Ivan

Hello Ram,
Another good view of this strange Hoverfly. Better focus on the eyes in your last shot but this view is interesting too and I like the composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hola Ram
Un macro muy interesante quizás le falta un poco de profunidad de campo para sacar la cabeza nítida, pero es una gran foto.
Un saludo

Hi Mr. Ram,
A very beautiful capture. I like the composition a lot. Thanks a lot for sharing.

A drone fly....very nicely captured and the notes give one pause to look again at the eye. I wonder why it was designed so complex, for something that has a rather short lifespan. Nature is a complex thing which we cannot ever have all the answers.

Sir, WOW but what are those white patches? I love the eyes. You are all our guru's and eye openor to the world of macro. Ganesh PT??

Hello Sir,
Please correct me if I am wrong..the SPecial eyes are in soft focus?????? Ivan had told me that in Macro photography of insects eyes are very important objects and you should not loose focus on that.
The abdoment part is in perfect focus. The wings are crisp clear.Colors are aslo nice.

regards
Mahesh
