A HOUSE SPARROW

The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a member of the Old World sparrow family Passeridae. It occurs naturally in most of Europe and much of Asia. It has also followed humans all over the world and has been intentionally or accidentally introduced to most of the Americas, sub-Saharan Africa and Australia as well as urban areas in other parts of the world.
In the United States it is also known as the English Sparrow, to distinguish it from native species, as the large North American population is descended from birds deliberately imported from Britain in the late 19th century. They were introduced independently in a number of American cities in the years between 1850 and 1875 as a means of pest control.
Wherever people build, House Sparrows sooner or later come to share their abodes. Though described as tame and semi-domestic, neither is strictly true; humans provide food and home, not companionship. The House Sparrow remains wary of man.
This 14 to 16 centimeters long bird is abundant in temperate climates, but not universally common; in many hilly districts it is scarce. In cities, towns and villages, even around isolated farms, it can be the most abundant bird.
The male House Sparrow has a grey crown, cheeks and underparts, black on the throat, upper breast and between the bill and eyes. The bill in summer is blue-black, and the legs are brown. In winter the plumage is dulled by pale edgings, and the bill is yellowish brown. The female has no black on head or throat, nor a grey crown; her upperparts are streaked with brown. The juveniles are deeper brown, and the white is replaced by buff; the beak is dull yellow. The House Sparrow is often confused with the smaller and slimmer Tree Sparrow, which, however, has a chestnut and not grey crown, two distinct wing bars, and a black patch on each cheek.
The House Sparrow is gregarious at all seasons in its nesting colonies, when feeding and in communal roosts.
Although the Sparrows' young are fed on the larvae of insects, often destructive species, this species eats seeds, including grain where it is available.
In spring, flowers — especially those with yellow colours — are often eaten; crocuses, primroses and aconites seem to attract the house sparrow most. The bird will also hunt butterflies.

Hi Ram,
A really perfect capture! Great sharpness, beautiful pose and colours, excellent composition and blurred background. I think Nikon is under full control!
TFS and best regards, José M.

Wow! Ram, it is a great shot of this sparrow! Wonderful side view with diagonal composition! Those colours on the bg with icy blue looks like a marble. Spot on sharpness on the birdie and nice eyecontact!

Btw, i know that you invited me to regular posting to TN but i don't have such beautiful photos in my archive and i'm waiting for the new shots. Then i will post regularly, i hope so :-) Last week i was at Germany and i took a Panasonic FZ20 as a second hand. i'm very excited to take new shots!
Greetings!
Ersin

Hi Ram,

Great shot, I love the pose and angle of the branch. You show good skill throwing the foreground and background branches out of focus.
The shot is well composed and framed. The image is nice and bright and you have and interesting eye contact.

Nice job,

Hello Ram,
This is very nice, esp. the color palette. Soft, muted colors and the smooth background add so much to the appeal. The lovely sparrow is well-framed. All in all, an excellent image.
Best wishes,
Hakan

I've never seen a House Sparrow looking so beautiful!! The light here is quite magic and the colours so gentle. I like the way he's perched in profile on the twigs and details are very sharp. Very nice composition and I like the smart framing too!

Hello Ram,
You may be restricted in your movements in Saudi Arabia, but you defy this by producing a constant variation of nature photos. Here you depict a male House Sparrow in a very fine way, with pleasing BG, composition and sharpness. What is more, the more extended black spotting on the brest suggest a southern race.
Nice to see a species that is drastically reduced in numbers in Europe.
TFs and best wishes, Ivan

a fine picture with nice light and colours.
IMO I think the details could be a bit better but nevertheless it's a very good picture.

Hi Ram,
A perfect picture in all respects: an enchanting House Sparrow (a species that until recently, unfortunately, has been disdained in our climes), captured with such a cute and charming pose, lines are just right to create a very appealing, technically flawless, composition, lighting as if of celestial beauty, radiating serenity and bliss. Thank you very much for sharing this unforgettable P. domesticus portrait.
With best regards,
Goran

Hi Ram

Between you, you're new toy, the neighbours palm tree (I think), and the local bird & insect colonies from Riyadh you keep on entertaining us with some lovely ornithological & entomological shots. This one has the coolest of cool BG's that really makes the little bird jumps right out of the frame.

The composition is excellent with a good POV since this little bird also gave you a great pose. The colours are natural and pleasing, the details are ever so sharp, and the lighting was well controlled with an overall soft result.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Ram,
This is such a fine and light picture. Excellent composition and wonderful harmonious colours. Even a little sparrow can be a good model for an excellent shot. I just hope they don't eat too many butterflies.
Best regards
Anne

WOw.. soft gentle colors.. very pleasing to the eye. Very nice compo and sharpness on the bird.

Lovely picture.

Hello Ram,
This is so funny to see that House Sparrow looks the same all around the world :) I have many of these little guys in my backyard too. I prefer taking pictures of the Tree Sparrow though as I see them less often. It is a very nice capture with great pose from the bird, nice details and composition. Its head maybe a little dark to my taste but it is really a minor nit. Thanks for sharing this one,
Claudine

Excellent camera control to capture this bird with total clearness and a beautiful composition Ram.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, background, framing, notes and PP.

I don't like it: the lack of the values of the image (with this equipment you can include those data).

DOF is really very good capturing fully in focus to the bird and producing an impeccable background of the scene.
Thank you and regards... Ricardo
