Rana bedriagae (Levantine Frog/Marsh Frog) (in Turk. Bataklık/Ova Kurbağası)

It is a middle-sized robust frog with a maximum length of 15 cm (average 7-10 cm), males are smaller than females. Head is large, triangular, with large prominent eyes with widely elliptical, horizontal pupils. Rounded eardrum is large and distinct. Extremities are relatively long, toes are distinctly webbed. The coloration is very variable. Dorsum colour varies between brownish and greenish, with scattered mostly rounded dark brown to dark green spots of irregular size, a common feature is the presence of light mid-dorsal stripe [ In my one of previous posting of the species from Cyprus this feature is not prominent]. Extremities bear distinct dark spots, which can form cross-bands on the hind legs. Venter usually dirty white or yellowish, frequently with small, dark markings; in some, the belly is reddish (In R. b. caralitana known from the SW and Central Anatolia Regions of Turkey). Vocal sacs of males are dark grey.

It is strongly aquatic, inhabits lakes, pools or slowly flowing streams with much vegetation. Stays in close proximity of water bodies and prefers low plains or marshes. Sometimes is seen in strong currents. A gregarious and diurnal species, but can forage also in the nighttime. Food spectrum comprises various invertebrates, and, occasionally, also small vertebrates. A female lays 5,000-10,000 eggs as several masses either between aquatic plants or directly into open water. Although common in majority of suitable habitats, it is locally endangered by water pollution and anthropogeneous changes of habitats.

The species is widespread along the Aegean coast and the southern part of the Anatolian highland (Turkey), Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Iraq and Cyprus with a vertical distribution up to 2500 m.

In Syria, this species is abundantly encountered in wetlands of the Mediterranean ecozone (The provinces Latakia and Tartus) of Syria, including the other western parts of Syria (Hims, Homs & Aleppo) and it was also detected in the spring waters at the high elevations of Lebanon Mountain Range around the mentioned provinces.

Ps. Lake Frogs in the Near East were long time suggested to belong to the widely distributed Rana ridibunda (Common Marsh Frog). Recently some scientists proved that these populations are distinctly different species distinguished from Rana ridibunda with its characteristic vocalization and especially having distinct dark cross-bands on the hind legs.

Hello Bayram,
This is superb! A great capture of the Levantine Marsh Frog, beautifully composed on the provided BG.
I suppose you know this, but I found that if you cover the frog with your hand for about 30 seconds, it will stay still long enough afterwards to take a photograph.
Thanks for sharing this my friend,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hi Bayram, splendid frog with wonderful details and superb sharpness, BRAVO!! very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Bayram,

What an interesting frog with the green stripe down his back! His marking are fascinating - the big black spots on his body and the black stripes on the legs. His eye is beautiful. Fantastic natural colors and details.

Hi Bayram,
Fine composition of this frog. Excellent pov to show it's colorations and body forms. Shows off nicely on the bright wood. Fine dof focus. tfs Richard

Ho, a cuddly friend from the Levant this time Bayram, a succesful exposure from all viewpoints my friend, our eternal "woodwork" looks fine within this composition.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Bayam,
it leaves me breathless, this portrait of the Levantine frog. All he details can be studied. ID is generally difficult with the Mediterranean frogs, hybrids abound. Your note explains well how to go about it. Thanks again for your free continuous field excursion!
Best regards
Dietrich

Hi Bayram...something not scaly or with big teeth for a change...nice to see a humble frog on the site...really nice colours shown up well....great and informative notes...

Hi Bayram,

Nice shot, another one that looks very similar to the Leopard Frog, Rana pipiens, that is so common here.

Now that I've been on this site for a while, I'm getting a little better feel for the point system and I've decided to give 1 point for "good" photos and reserve the 2 point assessment only for exceptionally good photos, so please don't think I'm liking your photos less, I've simply gone to a different way of giving points. I feel that the main focus here should be one of sharing informative photos and giving critical feedback rather than just trying to accumulate more points.

Thanks,
John

hi Bayram,
the name in my lenguage of this animal is rana and is similar to the scientifica name of it, it is a very nice portatrit as always from you, bravo Bayram
