European Bee-Eater with the bee just before swallowing it...
They are very good hunters, they have amazing hunting skills while they are flying. Usually after they catch their prey, they perch upon a branch and eat it (they also feed in the air if the catch is smaller). This was the case in also my previous posting of this bird. I have waited in the car very close to what it seems to be a favorite spot for them (also for me as the light, and the setting was very good)- this particular branch. They were flying around, hunting and coming back to perch there to eat their catch.

For those who wonder how they swallow the bees and other stinging insects without getting stung- the answer is;
Before swallowing a bee or wasp, they pound or rub the insect on a branch to remove the venom and stinger. Clever and practical :o)

European Bee-eaters are summer visitors to Turkey. They usually stay between April and August.

European Bee-eater
Merops apiaster
TR: Arikusu

*The bee-eaters are a group of near passerine birds in the family Meropidae. Most species are found in Africa but others occur in southern Europe, Madagascar, Australia and New Guinea. They are characterised by richly coloured plumage, slender bodies and usually elongated central tail feathers. All are colorful and have long downturned bills and pointed wings, which give them a swallow-like appearance when seen from afar.

Just as the expressive name reveals, bee-eaters predominantly eat insects, especially bees, wasps, and other flying insects, which are caught in the air by sallies from an open perch. While they will pursue any type of flying insect, honey bees predominate in their diet.

The European Bee-eater, Merops apiaster is a near passerine bird in the bee-eater family Meropidae. It breeds in southern Europe and in parts of north Africa and western Asia. It is strongly migratory, wintering in tropical Africa (or to North-Western India, southern India and Sri Lanka in the case of Asian birds). This species occurs as a spring overshoot north of its range, with occasional breeding in northwest Europe.

This species, like other bee-eaters, is a richly-coloured, slender bird. It has brown and yellow upper parts, whilst the wings are green and the beak is black. It can reach a length of 27-29 cm, including the two elongated central tail feathers. Sexes are alike.

This is a bird which breeds in open country in warmer climates. Just as the name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat insects, especially bees, wasps and hornets, which are caught in the air by sorties from an open perch. Before eating its meal, a European Bee-eater removes the sting by repeatedly hitting the insect on a hard surface. It eats some 250 bees daily.

These bee-eaters are gregarious, nesting colonially in sandy banks, preferably near river shores, usually at the beginning of May. They make a relatively long tunnel in which the 5 to 8, spherical white eggs are laid around the beginning of June. Both the male and the female take care of the eggs, which are brooded for about 3 weeks. These birds also feed and roost communally.

The call is a pleasant distinctive trill.

Hi Selen!

To be at the right place at the right moment... or to be very patient! This could be the descriptive notes of this amazing picture. Congratulations for having captured the very moment when the poor bee had to disappear. Together with your very interesting and instructive notes this is a highly valuable posting.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Selen,
Not exactly a friend of the beekeeper, but an excellent capture of a Bee-eater about to swallow one of our honey producers. The pose, and sharpness are so good that I might have been tempted to crop this to just include this individual without the other one that is looking away.
Whatever, this is an excellent capture and thanks for sharing it.
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Selen,
Another excellent and very well-timed shot of the Bee-eaters. Without the left one it would have been even better but I expect you couldn't crop it any more. Anyhow, the bee-hunter is beautifully in focus and details very sharp. I love their colours!

Hi Selen,

I have only seen Bee Eaters in picture - I'd love to see one in real life. But this is a first - to see one with a bee in his mouth! Fantastic timing to capture this. Beautiful colors, sharp details, lovely background and quite a bonus to have two in the frame.

yes of course, a Bee eater eats bees! Wonderful action shot of the otherwise sitting birds! How you achieve this high level of photography is your secret, but patience is probably a part of it. Thanks for sharing.

Hola Selen.

Saludos Selen.

What a great action shot, Selen!
Even I had tried this when the Bee Eaters were ever present on the electric wires outside my house last winter. However, mine was an amateurish effort; this is truly professional.
Capturing a moment like that and that too with such phenomenal clarity is well neigh impossible.
These European Bee Eaters are lookers in term of colours on them.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful image.

Hi Selen
