Geographic Range: The Painted Lady is found everywhere in the world except South America, the Arctic, and Australia.

Habitat: The Painted Lady is found almost anywhere, but they tend to inhabit brightly lighted and open environments. They prefer clover fields, flowery meadows and hilly country. Marshes, dunes, and thorn scrubs also attract the Painted Lady.

Physical Description: The Painted Lady has a pointed forewing which bears a distinct white bar. The hindwing has a submarginal row of 5 tiny black dots. The upperside of the freshly emerged butterfly is orange with rose-like overtones. The underside is a mottled gray, brown, and black.

Development: Females lay eggs on the plants their babies will eat. The caterpillars that hatch out feed continuously and molt several times. After a few weeks they transform into a pupa, go through a complete metamorphosis, and emerge as an adult butterfly. The timing of this depends on the climate, the warmer it is the faster they grow.
Caterpillar hosts: More than 100 host plants have been noted; favorites include thistles (Asteraceae), hollyhock and mallow (Malvaceae), and various legumes (Fabaceae).
Adult food: The Painted Lady prefers nectar from composites 3-6 feet high, especially thistles; also aster, cosmos, blazing star, ironweed, and joe-pye weed. Flowers from other families that are visited include red clover, buttonbush, privet, and milkweeds.

Reproduction: A green, barrel-shaped egg is laid singly on a host plant. The color of the larva varies from chartreuse with black marbling to a purple with a yellow hue. Breeding season includes all year in the tropics, spring and summer in cooler climates.

Predation: Adult painted ladies' main defenses are flight and camouflage. The caterpillars hide in small silk nests on top of leaves, and may have chemical defenses, but this is uncertain. Wasps, spiders, ants and birds are known predators.

The Painted Lady is also known as the Thistle Butterfly because of its strong liking for thistles, and the Cosmopolitan for its worldwide distribution.

hello Bayram, this is an unusual pov for a picture of a butterfly but I really like it, it makes us plunge into the picture and the colours are wonderful. I like seeing the underneath as well as the top of the wings. The picture is sharp and well framed, and the beautiful flowers want us to stop everything we are doing and lay in a bed of such flowers. Thank you!

It's a shame it was looking away from you but from this POV we can see the patterns on both the upperwings and lowerwings which is a great thing to capture!

Fantastic image, very well created DOF, awesome compo, colors, sharpness, background. A fine dedication, too. I know this specie from here, too, but never managed to capture a useful photo of it. Yours is absolutely perfect, although I prefer butterfly shots with fully opened wings, but it's a question of personal taste.
