Dear Friends,

Today another magnificent raptor which i saw during our last trip while we were traveling to Ardahan province from Şavşat (Artvin province) at the high plateau of Kocabey (2350 asl). The air was rainy and closed. Since i am not experienced on raptors like previous one, i could not say its id. It would be nice if someone can give its exact id.

During our trip i saw many raptors that i noticed they love high plateaus for living.

Hope you can like this shot too.

TFS and Have a nice Sunday!
Cheers,

Ps. As i mentioned before, i am uploading these elegant raptors to contribute their distributional knowledge, helping ornitologist friends.

UPDATE: Thanks Nigel (Merlin) for id.

Aquila pomarina (Lesser Spotted Eagle) [in Turk. Küçük Orman Kartalı] (Adult)

The lesser spotted eagle is a medium-sized bird of prey with dark brown plumage, broad wings and a small bill. While there can be significant variation between the brown plumage tones exhibited by different individuals, the head, neck and upperwing coverts are generally paler than the body, and the flight feathers are usually particularly dark. In most specimens, but especially noticeable in younger adults, there is also a white patch on the upperwings that can be seen during flight. In contrast to the brown plumage, the eyes, feet and the skin at the base of the beak are yellow. The juvenile is darker than the adult, with a rufous-yellow patch on the nape, spots on the upperwing coverts, and white tips on tail and the trailing edge of the wing.

The lesser spotted eagle's breeding range extends throughout much of central, east and south-east Europe, through Turkey and the Caucasus mountains, as far as southern Russia and Iran. Vagrant individuals occur even further afield, from France and Spain, east to Kazakhstan, north as far as Finland and south to the Arabian Peninsula. During migration, the entire population heads south, passing through Israel on route to the wintering grounds in southern and eastern Africa.

An opportunistic and versatile predator, the lesser spotted eagle feeds upon a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Its major source of prey varies according to location, with populations in humid lowlands consuming large numbers of amphibians, while those in hills and mountains are more reliant on mammals. At the wintering grounds, this species commonly consumes nestlings of the red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea), along with swarms of alate termites. Three hunting techniques are employed by the lesser spotted eagle: soaring at around 100 metres before diving down; swopping down from a perch; and walking along the ground. Breeding populations of the lesser spotted eagle in central Europe commence egg laying in late April and early May. The birds build a large platform of twigs, usually high up in a tree, but on rare occasions on the ground, with a central nest cup, around 30 centimetres wide, lined with green twigs and sometimes with grass. A clutch of two eggs is normally laid, which are incubated for 36 to 41 days. During the following eight-week fledging period, the older chick frequently kills its younger sibling. Sexual maturity is not reached until three to four years old and the lifespan is believed to be 26 years.

Merhaba Bayram,

Again, a wonderful contribution from you! The raptor looks just adorable with its nice positioning in the picture. The colors are nice and so are the sharpness and POV. The DOF is nicely maintained. The like the expressions in the head part of this beautiful bird. Wonderful job!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

PS: My apologies for not helping you in identifying this bird.

Hi Byram,
The composition is very nice with the raptor nicely position on the pole. But, the sharpness of the photo is not good at all. There are no details visible in the feathers and the edges of the bird look very blurry. Did you do a heavy crop to come to this result?
TFS,
Niek

Olan koşullarda bence iyi bir çekim olmuş hocam. Yükleme amacınızı da dikkate alırsak bence önemli bir katkı sağlıyorsunuz. Emeğinize sağlık.

hello MF Bayram!
today neighbors, catching of the raptor is well done, despite the problems of weather, lacking a little definition in the details

best regards sERGIO

Wonderful shot of this fine looking raptor with lovely colours and good details on its plummages.
Warm regards,

Yine zor ışık koşullarında ldukça başarılı bir çekim olmuş Bayram hocam. Özellikle kompozisyon çok güzel ve alan derinliği de etkileyici. Fondaki pastel renkler de cok güzel.
Elinize sağlık.

Hello again, Bayram
You have photographed an adult Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina. The feathered tarsi identify this bird as a "true" eagle, the small head and bill (and other morphological and plumage features) separate it from the Golden Eagle. Yes, it looks wet ;)
Regards, Nigel.

Bayram bunun buyuklugu cok olsa gerek...
Direk bile yaninda kucuk kalmıs... ben de merak ettim ne diye.. yirtici kuslardan hep korkmusumdur... sanirim izledigimiz filmlerden:)
Ama gercekten cok gorkemli duruyor...
Eline saglik. selamlar herkesten.
Leyla.

Hello Bayram,
Undoubtedly a Lesser Spotted Eagle. There aren't so many places in Turkey were they are present. So a special one!
Good photo for the difficult conditions. Nice sharpness and beautiful natural colours. Excellent composition and OOF BG.

Hello Bayram friend!

It is a pleasure to be able to see your work, always done with both professional and good technique.

I was away a bit of TN due to work commitments, but hope to return frequently to share from this week.

Nice work you have published here, the bird seems to be "thinking" pose gives this character set.

As always, membership and general level of the photo are excellent.

Greetings, hugs and thanks for sharing your work!

Jesús

Hi LBB,

I'm sure your trip isn't focused on birds but you are finding ones many of us would love to see. I'm glad to see it has been identified. I love the pose - he looks ready to take flight. The face and feathers are marvelous - those are pretty big claws. Keep finding these gems to share with us.

Merhaba MF Bayram,
i never have the opportunity to shoot a raptor like this one. Even a small bulbul makes me feel so difficult and very challenging to shoot.
this one is already something to me.
Well presented in a very difficult weather i guess.

Foozi
