Polyommatus icarus (Common Blue) [in Turk. Çok Gözlü Mavi]

A realy common but beautiful butterfly today:) and I would like to dedicate this “female Common Blue” on an atractive flowers to one of my beloved and heartfelt friends on TN, Dûrzan (cirano) who is also one of the best admirer of this beauty on TN:). Hope you can like this Heval Dûrzan! I wish you all the best!

A small butterfly with a wingspan of 20-32 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is bright blue with a thin black line along the margin and a white outer margin, The underside ground colour is grey with blue-green highlights in the basal area. On the forewing and hindwing, parallel with the outer margin, is a series of black marks outlined with white. Similar markings are present in the cell and within the discal and basal areas of the forewing and hindwing. In the submarginal area there is a series of joined, orange, triangular-shaped marks. The upperside ground colour of the female is brown with a series of orange submarginal marks. On the forewing there is a small black mark at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is light grey-brown. The markings are similar to the underside markings of the male. In females of the first brood there are mauve highlights on the uppersides, which in some specimens completely replaces the brown colour.

Common blue is a wide-ranging species which flies throughout all Europe, North Africa and all of western and central Asia. The adult butterflies start to emerge at the end of February and are on the wing until the beginning of December in successive, overlapping broods. Overwinters as a pupa. The recorded host-plants are various species of the Leguminosae family. The larvae are attended by ants whilst developing on the host-plant.

It is one of the most common and most widespread butterfly. Recorded in a wide variety of habitats, such as maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land, river valleys and forests, from sea level to the higest points. It is a very common butterfly wherever Lucerne is grown. Observed to be attracted to a wide variety of flowers.

Lovely macro capture of the Common Blue butterfly! The sharpness and POV are great with nicely managed DOF. The colors are very natural and the contrast between the colors of te Common Blue and the blurred BG, is perfect.
